Haad Rin on the Island of Koh Pha Ngan in the Gulf of Thailand got discovered by the backpacker crowd in the late 80's. Backpackers were looking for something even more rustic, private, and cheaper as neighboring island, Koh Samui was already growing in popularity. Haad Rin Beach on the south east corner on the Island of Koh Pha Ngan is famous for being home of the Full Moon Party dating back to the first party in 1988.
In neighboring Koh Samui, you can find shopping malls, McDonald's, and big commercial stores. Everything is more expensive there and it's more of a family vacation environment. Here in Koh Pha Ngan there still is not a McDonald's. The island still holds onto it's cheap backpacker roots; offering incredible value for the young backpacker crowd that come here to let loose and have a good time!
