Life of a Fish (Visual Poem)

Life of a Fish.png

Story Time

I used to own a fish. His name was Lil Thug. One day Lil Thug tried to wiggle his way through his fish castle window and snagged his neck on a tiny jagged edge. He bled out, and that was a sad, sad day for Doctor Lawyer Jr. He was a betta fish who had a lot of touches with death before then – one time I put in a PetSmart aquarium decoration for him to enjoy. The next morning, I woke up and saw that the paint had dissolved into the water, nearly suffocating the little guy. Damn you PetSmart quality control. Another time I thought I’d buy him a friend – a ghost shrimp named Lil Shrimp. The next morning, I woke up and saw that Lil Thug had a bloat in his belly that looked large enough to warrant concern. He had eaten Lil Shrimp. Poor guy had a stomach ache for the next few days and didn’t play that much. But when he was feeling good, he blew awesome bubble nests and loved chasing after bloodworm treats.

I wrote this poem as a heartfelt dedication to my love of Lil Thug as well as delicious sushi. Sure, it sounds a bit weird now that I’m writing it, but damn, those Japanese know how to cook a raw fish right. Maki, Sushi, Negiri, Sashimi, so why not go one step further? I took it there, and I’m damned to hell for it. Yes, that’s an original, delicately brushed watercolor in the background. Shout out to #Photoshop. Shout out to #MicrosoftWord. Shoutout to #life, y’all. My heart goes out to all the Lil Thugs out there. Keep on thuggin’.
