For those who know not
I am black.
My skin was keen to attract
the dark.
So it's the night
I adorn under the sun
and the vast clear blue sky.
Melanin kissed me
from when I was conceived
by she who made black
seem like half of her dark
tone smooth like a river-bed stone.
I am black
like the slaves that built
the west
before my motherland
Africa was freed
by sacrificing our warriors
to fight for something
that was ours, to begin with.
I am also black
like the rare Tahitian pearls
sitting pretty
at the bottom of the sea
undiscovered.
I am black
like most unliberated Africans
looking to be accepted
by a society
that deems us unequal.
Thank you for coming and for your support.
