WEEKEND FREEWRITE | I AM HOME ALONE: A POEM

Again I have not done the freewrite as hosted by @mariannewest in a while. Today is a lovely Sunday and I felt the need to do some mental exercise.

You can join the freewrite fun here

The prompt that I picked for the weekend freewrite is 'home alone'

Time: 7.02 am - 7.07am

I AM HOME ALONE

I am home alone,
Waiting for the clock
To strike four,
So my eyes will shut
The darkness between my lids
And my lips would cease
To tremble and mutter,
To whisper about shadows
Crawling on cracked tear stained walls.

It is midnight
And dogs are barking,
Random sounds are scraping
My earlobes, seeking,
Worming into my oesophagus
Like oil, like a black sulphuric stink.

I gasp and shake,
I breathe and force back bile.
I try to dream, to pick
Pieces of beautiful light
But darkness sits atop my lids
And presses my face to the pillow.
It holds my hands and chokes my throat.
It throttles me until the sun peeks
And release comes.
I can't be home alone because
Then the demons, they come.
