This is the start of my Book/ ebook project meant to inspire the poor and also those from the so-called Third World Countries.More articles will be written. Soon I will have to compile and revise them to publish a book meant to help the above mentioned and anyone else with interests in these issues. Thank you, Siyabonga , Asante Sana
Section 1: The Dependency Mentality
Definition of the dependency mentality
This is the belief that one is entitled to get benefits from their parents, government, religious organization, donors etc. This mentality not only destroys critical thinking and positive innovation but results in poverty, wars and all the other negative problems to mankind. One should not believe that their country's natural resources will bring them salvation because this doesn't work. What if the natural resources are exhausted, do you have plan B?
Who this message is directed to:
- To the youths in the world who still have the entitlement mentality
- To the people of Africa, South America and Asia who still believe their governments are responsible for their welfare.
The Story:
“No army can withstand the strength of an idea whose time has come.”- Victor Hugo
With me planning to write such a book one may question why? So here is my answer. Since I was a child me and the majority of people from Africa where I come from we have been socially constructed to depend on something. There is nothing wrong with depending on your parents or guardians whilst below the age of 18. Yes whilst your parents may provide most of your basic needs maybe up until the age 25 I think one should start thinking of ways to become independent in all ways at the age of 19. However this is not the case in this world for about 90% of the population.
As soon as most people get a job they become dependent on their employer. And once you go dependent on your employer for salaries and other allowances I assure you that its most likely you will never become independent. Few may think again and do their own things but the majority are most likely never to come back. After you get 50 or 60 or 65 years(depending on your country's future laws on retirement age)you will have to retire and start depending on your retirement funds which you saved during the 30 or so years that you worked. I am sure a life like that won't be interesting since maybe your retirement funds wont be enough to cover your basic needs for most governments don't care for the old. Next you may find yourself now depending on your children and grandchildren(that won't be interesting to see your offspring struggling to assist you).
So what am I saying?
I am telling you that one needs to be independent on themselves until they kick the bucket. This I mean in terms of finances, thinking and all other things you need. You have to think high to go higher.
So here are some of the things most people depend on and the solutions to deal with this. I hope you will find yourself enjoying to learn this.
1 . Depending on your boss for the success of your life.
This is a major trap I don't encourage you to. Only shortsighted people would like to believe that their 'Midas Touch' boss can solve their problems. I have seen most youths from Africa wish to work at certain companies for the rest of their lives. In most cases these are large corporations like Amazon, Alibaba and Microsoft. There is nothing wrong in working at those companies but one has to depend on their own business systems. Lets say a depression comes you may find your self being a victim of your boss' downsizing. To make the long story short youths of today need not think of being employed but being employers themselves. There is better joy and happiness in doing things for yourself than depending on your boss and or company. Think 21st Century.
2 . Expecting your government to solve your problems.
Yes whilst we vote for these people to solve our daily problems our fantasies about them are never realistic. Its ok to receive healthcare, pension and other basics from the City/State Councils and or Government but having too much dependency leads to failure. What if that system runs out of cash? What will you do?
Basically what I am trying to tell the youth is that be independent. Be the solver not the dependent. But if you ever get a chance to get into these systems make it better for everyone for we growth via assisting each others and making the world better.I think that is what Paul was saying about Love in 1 Corinthians 13.
3 .Expecting your pension will cover all your expenses after retirement age
I discussed this above and told you that you don't want to do this for it has serious repercussions and the future is not predictable. I think this is a 20th Century concept that was supposed to end during that era but found itself having supporters during this information age. This is the Information Age and there is Speed of Thought as Bill Gates wrote in his book
One needs to invest in Fixed Assets as supported by Robert T. Kiyosaki in his books Rich Dad, Poor Dad and The Cashflow Quadrants . Such assets include investing in properties that appreciate with time like real estate.
4 . Trusting in the charismatic magnetic politicians and other leaders - that is a big blunder and never do this
I once said this before. Most politicians know that people want to believe and be part of anything great so they know how to make you feel this. Its a shame that most youths fall for these old tricks in believing that someone else carry their solutions. Don't be part of this.
5 . Not looking for other sources of income for you to be financially independent
Most people relax by not researching for other ways to grow. Charles Darwin once said :
It Is Not the Strongest of the Species that Survives But the Most Adaptable - Charles Darwin
So therefore sometimes learning new ways to make money is necessary. You may read the book Multiple Streams of Income: How to Generate a Lifetime of Unlimited Wealth! to get some tips to get more income.
6 . Believing too much in the education system created by someone
Its good to be educated. In fact education is the most important thing anyone can get. It puts you at a better position in this world than without it. What I am against is the belief that becoming a Doctor or Professor I have solved my problems. We need the entrepreneurial spirit in the educated youths to succeed. Some never ever engage in critical thinking after graduation. This is a major blow. So use your education wisely or you will become a social robot. Use your education for large-scale development . By the way there is a difference between being Educated and being Learned( I won't discuss this today).
7 . Dependency on your country's natural resources
Thinking that your minerals will bring you salvation is dangerous for thinking so is ignoring history. For instance the Democratic Republic of Congo is the richest nation in terms of mineral but the poorest in GDP. Many other countries are better even without natural resources. That is where correct education is needed to solve the wrong beliefs. Instead believe in yourself that you can bring the great change.
8 . Dependent on your spouse
This should end in this day and age. Its good that most women are becoming financially independent which was far from possible during the 1900s. If women become independent that means the number of those financially well rises. People should be financially independent by themselves not to expect salvation from their spouse. That is my message to the youths or you will face huge consequences.
Women and even men should desist from the idea of marrying a rich person or so. I have seen some people who wish for that but I have one message for them: MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS. If our generation keeps supporting this then we are doomed.
I support education for it has helped those living in poverty. What most people don't know is that ever-since Ghana gained its independence during the 1950s many people have been saved from poverty through being independent personally and with the rise of women. Yes many great things will come out of Black Africa.
9 . Too much belief in miracles and then relaxing
Yes faith is good but James the writer of the Christian book said ''Faith without works is dead''. Yes you may be told that you will make money sometime by one of the priests. Most youths relax for years expecting there will be miracles but its rare. You have to work for it to get it. Don't be part of the group that don't work expecting that God will solve their problems whilst not working. Even Paul the great Apostle was a tent-maker and Jesus a carpenter.
10 . Dependent on your relatives' assistance
Don't do this. It benefits more to give them than to take from them.
11 Church and or religious organization assistance
Find other ways to get income. Gifts to these organizations are meant to help the poor. Instead give them something rather than take from them.
