Portrait Photography Contest Entry- Kyle

I love that the theme for Round 26 of the Steemit Portrait Photography Contest is Male Portraits. It's about time!

I took this shot of Kyle on a lovely summer day. His mother agency, DEJAVU Model Management, had asked me to do some quick casual headshots as they had just dyed his hair platinum blonde (he was light honey brown before). This move elevated his look like crazy and we were super excited to show it off.

I really loved this shot because it's a little bit off. The way the crystal makes his one eye look brighter than it really is, and the not quite perfectly crisp focus, make it just that little bit more interesting. To me this is a strong case for not immediately rejecting your not-quite-tack-sharp shots. I can't remember who I was chatting with about that recently.
The blue background kept the warm sunshine from looking too warm and complimented his fresh dye job really nicely. Kyle rocked a fierce Blue Steel look without looking like he was trying too hard. His strong features are well-represented in a headshot that is effective while still being different. Success!
For those interested in my lighting methods- sorry to be boring with this one, nothing but juicy sunshine going on here. The strong midday sun was coming into this empty room through a sliding glass door (you can see the sun patch on the ground in the reflection in his eyes) so it was somewhat diffused. And, I angled Kyle so that the light would rake across his body, ensuring definition for his muscles and facial features. See? Even natural light can be fun! :)
Of course I should also mention the foreground effect I have going on here... this is my crystal again. I hold it directly in front of my lens in order to get these effects. It's completely trial and error, no technique really involved.
