Penghulu presents at the ceremony to conduct the oath of marriage.



Literally, penghulu means “headman, chief, or director” of tribes, clans, or villages. But in Southeast Asia, including Indonesia, it is used as a title for religious leaders. Penghulu will lead a wedding ceremony.

In older Malay writings it is also used as an honorific title for the prophet Muḥammad, indicating him as “leader of all the prophets” (penghulu para nabi). In more Javanised areas the word indicated the highest religious officials, both at the central courts of the various sultanates and at places...

Penghulu memimpin pernikahan.



Secara harfiah penghulu adalah pemimpin suku atau desa. Tapi, di tanah Melayu, dia juga berarti pemimpin agama Islam. Kini penghulu lebih berperan sebagai pemimpin upacara pernikahan. Dialah yang memimpin ijab kabul yang diucapkan pengantin.
