#Portraitcontest Week 30: Pensive

Every once in a while, I have a photo to contribute as a "promo" of sorts for my husband @jasonrussell's #portraitcontest. I don't compete for prizes, but I still think it's fun to play along :) The incredibly talented photographer @kommienezuspadt is judging this round and the theme is "Emotion". So I thought of this photo of Beth that was taken in our home several years ago when I was just learning to play with artificial light.

Beth used to come over to our house fairly often for shoots in the living room just for fun. I chose this photo because now, in 2018, Beth has opened up about some personal demons and struggles that she was suffering during this time in her life that she has just recently overcome. Looking back on this photo, she must have had a lot on her mind. It just goes to show that despite outside appearances, we never truly know what is going on "inside".

As I mentioned, this was taken when I was just starting to learn about artificial light and studio equipment, so tonight, Jason and I doctored it up a little in Photoshop. As he was working on some of the layers, I asked him to save this one for me because I thought it might make a neat pencil/charcoal sketch. I'm by no means an artist, but I used to have fun messing with pencil sketches and I thought it might be neat to set a personal goal to challenge myself to try to draw sometime soon!

I always enjoy looking through the #portaitcontest entries with Jason, so I look forward to seeing those emotive portraits!!!
