Il 9 ottobre di ogni anno si celebra l’International Beer & Pizza Day, la giornata internazionale che rende omaggio a una delle combinazioni di cibi e bevande più iconiche: la pizza accompagnata dalla birra. Entrambe sono disponibili in un numero infinito di varietà ed sono apprezzate da molte culture in tutto il mondo.
Il Beer & Pizza Day è nato nel 2016 da un'idea di un designer di siti Web, Nick Saulino. Amante delle pinte di birra e delle fette di pizza, Saulino ha deciso che l'abbinamento meritava un giorno tutto suo. E così si è dato da fare affinché il Beer and Pizza Day diventasse ufficiale.
La birra è una delle bevande più antiche prodotte dall'uomo. A quanto pare risale almeno al quinto millennio a.C. ed la sua presenza è stata testimoniata nella storia scritta dell'antico Egitto e della Mesopotamia. Gli egizi la includevano in ogni livello della loro catena alimentare. Era la bevanda preferita degli schiavi addetti alla costruzione delle piramidi: la bevanda veniva apprezzata sia per il suo gusto sia perché forniva le calorie e le proteine necessarie per affrontare le dure giornate di lavoro. Secondo un’antica leggenda, la birra è nata per la distrazione di una donna che, dopo la raccolta dei cereali, li dimenticò alle intemperie in un’anfora. La pioggia riempì il vaso bagnando i semi e innescando, in maniera del tutto casuale, la fermentazione, dando vita a una sostanza liquida dolciastra che è piaciuta subito. Secondo la leggenda, dunque, la birra è donna.
La parola pizza è stata documentata per la prima volta nel 997 d.C. a Gaeta. Il precursore della pizza fu probabilmente la focaccia, nota ai romani come panis focacius (ossia pane schiacciato cotto sotto le ceneri del focolare), a cui venivano poi aggiunti i condimenti. All'inizio la pizza non aveva alcuna salsa di pomodoro: i pomodori, infatti, sono arrivati in Europa dopo la scoperta dell’America nel 1492.
I migliori abbinamenti di birra e pizza
Birra e pizza stanno bene insieme perché i sapori si esaltano proprio grazie al loro contrasto: secondo gli esperti le birre più leggere e croccanti, come le pilsner (più dolci) e le pale ale (leggermente amare), si abbinano a pizze più leggere, come quelle condite con verdure fresche. Le pizze più corpose, invece, prediligono le birre più scure, come le stout o le porter. Le IPA si sposano bene anche quelle più sostanziose per via della loro luppolatura.

Accepted in 2016, it is the day dedicated to one of the most famous foods in the history of food and one of the most widely consumed beverages in the world, which form a perfect partnership on the dinner table: Pizza and beer.
Every year on 9 October we celebrate International Beer & Pizza Day, the international day that pays tribute to one of the most iconic food and drink combinations: pizza accompanied by beer. Both come in an infinite number of varieties and are enjoyed by many cultures around the world.
Beer & Pizza Day was born in 2016 from an idea of a website designer, Nick Saulino. A lover of pints of beer and slices of pizza, Saulino decided that the pairing deserved a day of its own. And so he set about making Beer and Pizza Day official.
Beer is one of the oldest man-made beverages. It apparently dates back at least to the fifth millennium B.C. and its presence has been witnessed in the written history of ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. The Egyptians included it in every level of their food chain. It was the favourite drink of the slaves who built the pyramids: the drink was appreciated both for its taste and because it provided the calories and protein needed to cope with the hard days' work. According to an ancient legend, beer originated due to the distraction of a woman who, after harvesting cereals, forgot them in the weather in an amphora. The rain filled the jar, soaking the seeds and triggering, quite accidentally, fermentation, resulting in a sweetish liquid substance that was immediately loved. According to legend, therefore, beer is a woman.
The word pizza was first documented in 997 A.D. in Gaeta. The forerunner of pizza was probably the focaccia, known to the Romans as panis focacius (i.e. flattened bread baked under the ashes of the hearth), to which toppings were then added. In the beginning, pizza had no tomato sauce: in fact, tomatoes arrived in Europe after the discovery of America in 1492.
Best Beer and Pizza Pairings
Beer and pizza go well together because the flavours are enhanced by their contrast: according to experts, lighter, crisper beers, such as pilsners (sweeter) and pale ales (slightly bitter), go well with lighter pizzas, such as those topped with fresh vegetables. Fuller-bodied pizzas, on the other hand, prefer darker beers, such as stouts or porters. IPAs also go well with more substantial pizzas because of their hopiness.
