Thanks again for @someone for giving me another opportunity to guide you to Montreal, Quebec in Canada.

First of all, may I ask for your blessing to us. My husband and I have been married for a year. This is our first anniversary. During the past year, we experienced a lot, we went through a lot challenges, changes and hardships in life. Maybe more than a lot people can think of. Even though we haven’t been together as long as a lot other couples, we really enjoy company of each other and love each other. To celebrate our anniversary, we decided to go to Montreal by car. It took us around 5 hours to get to Montreal.

From Boston to Montreal, we drove through New Hampshire and Vermont, mainly on highway 95, 3 and 89. There are tons of trees and mountains along the way. It’s early fall, some of the trees have changed color, but mostly not. If we came two weeks later, I believe it will be a better timing for foliage. I believe we would want to go back to Vermont or New Hampshire for the peak.

When we left home, the cloud was very low, weather was a little bit chilly but comfortable. Without the sun, different layers of low could look pretty cool too.

When we were entered into New Hampshire, weather became nicer. The sun came out, we started to see blue sky. Very beautiful. It was a perfect day for outdoor activity.

My husband was so focused on driving. He loves driving. I am on the contrary, am happy to be his assistant, passing him water, peeling oranges, etc. Without driving by myself, I could have more time to really enjoy the sceneries on both sides, taking a lot photos and do selfie with my hubby.

When we entered Vermont, other than mountains and trees, there are few areas which are pretty flat, look very nice, so I also took some of the photos too.

After around 4 hours of driving, finally we got to the border. Highgate Springs is the last exit before the border in US side.

IMG_4410.JPG

Finally here’s the border. Not sure if it was because it was Friday and people were still working, there were not many cars at the border waiting for inspection.

IMG_4414.JPG

IMG_4415.JPG

French is main language in Quebec, we started to see French signs. This was taken at the border while we were waiting for inspection.

IMG_4416.JPG

Passing immigration was easy. No need to fill in any form. The officer, wearing bulletproof vase sitting in the booth. Each car needs to wait at the line before the light turns green. You need to stop at the booth, and hand in your passport. The officer asked few casual questions like “why are you going to Canada?”, ”how long do you plan to stay?”, “where are you going to stay?” “Do you carry any arms and weapons in the car”? I really doubt that there will be anyone answer “yes” to the last question. They don’t even check the car. I guess they did random check. We are nice people, so they let us go through very quickly.

Not too far away from the border, we saw the welcome board by Quebec in French- Bon Jour.

Bon Jour.

IMG_4417.JPG

There is still around one hour from border to Montreal. Canada is the 2nd largest country in the world. The land is large. We saw endless lands for corns and other agricultures.

Finally we saw downtown Montreal over the water. Here are some photos taken before we got to downtown.

The hotel we stay is in downtown Montreal. Right cross the street from Cathedrale Marle-Reine du Monde. Very convenient to go to restaurant and everywhere. Overall the hotel is pretty nice. We didn’t stop by any restaurant on our way over, we only had some snacks in the car. We were really hungry when we got to the hotel. So the first thing we wanted to do is to find a good restaurant so we can enjoy nice food here. Food exploration is one of the must do list when you come to Montreal. Right after checking in, we checked with Concierge for recommendations of local restaurant. He highly recommended a French restaurant near the hotel. We walked toward it right away as soon as we got the direction.

The restaurant is about 5mins walk from the hotel. It’s on the diagonal cross Square Conchester. A liberty monument square. The restaurant is called Dominion. We saw that many restaurants here like to set up a temporary outdoor padio so people can sit and eat outdoor. It’s very nice weather, most people chose to sit outside. Even though it’s by the main road, still feel very comforting with cool breeze.

We started with beer and lemonade. It’s quite different that they put a spoon in the lemonade. In US, they usually give you a straw. I was a little bit strange by it. I guess this is some culture difference too? The food was served very slow, not sure if this is another culture difference. Since it was early for dinner, there was not a lot people. But I used to hear that French food always requests longer time. While we were waiting for our food, we heard our neighbors talking in French. French to me sounds very elegant. I like their accent even though I can’t understand a single word. But one idea glimpsed, hmmm, maybe I should start to learn French. Just kidding, there are too many other priorities in life. Learning a new language sounds cool but not practical now.

IMG_4558.JPG

When I was a little bit impatient waiting for our food, my husband told me that French food always requests longer time to cook so all the flavor goes into the food and makes it perfect. Sounds like nothing I’ve known. Hopefully it’s good and worth waiting. Finally, the food was served. I can’t say it’s perfect, but overall not too bad. I ordered steamed mussels with hams. The flavor was just about right. Esp the soup. Not very salty that I drank it all. Strangely they don’t serve you bread with steam mussels like in US. The fries were good too with their home-made source. I was always not a fan of special source, I usually would prefer traditional catch up. But theirs was good. Maybe I was too hungry, I finished them all. By the way, dining in Montreal also needs to tip. I was not sure about it, had thought maybe they don’t have this custom here. But I was wrong, it’s same as US, around 15-20%, you can go up and below based on the service you get.

After early dinner, it was still early. We decided to tour around part of the downtown. We didn’t plan to buy anything from here, it was more window shopping. The shops here are very similar in US, there are a lot American brands too. Nothing was real special for us. Before I came here, I told my colleague that we wanted to come here. One colleague told me that when she was a kid, she used to come here with her parents. She was very impressed by the underground market(mall), and she highly recommended me to check it out. To be honest, I wasn’t quite sure what underground mall she was talking about. It happened that it’s very near to where we dined. Therefore, we went there to check it out. I was a little bit disappointed. It’s no difference from all the underground market we saw in Hong Kong and China. Nothing is real special. But at least I know understand what she was talking about. For a shopper, maybe it’s a very cool place to go, but for us, no.

Few impressions of the downtown from short couple hours walk-

> Churches-

There are a lot huge and magnificent churches. Like Casillique Notre-Dame, Cathedrale Marle-Reine du Monde, Promendades Cathedrale, Cathedrale Christ Church, St. George’s Church. The most famous one is Casillique Notre-Dame. It’s the 2nd largest church in North America. But as it’s in old town, we had to wait for next day.

比如Casillique Notre-Dame, Cathedrale Marle-Reine du Monde, Promendades Cathedrale, Cathedrale Christ Church, St. George’s Church.

> Decorations & key offerings at the malls-

There are a lot big department store and malls in Montreal. Each mall has their own character, like indoor ice skating ground, indoor music spring etc. Even if we have no plan to shop, still good to see all the variances.

> Relax & Casual life-

Right in front of a mall, they put up some hammocks for pedestrians to rest. You can use curtain to separate the room for privacy. This is a very cool idea.

IMG_4608.JPG

Lifestyle seems to be pretty relax. After work, people will sit on the steps of the square, talk and play. I bet this is part of European culture, people smokes here a lot. There are people smoking everywhere, and there are also a lot cigarette ends on the floor. I bet a lot smokers would be very happy to hear this.

> Sports-

体育-
