SHTF - How You Could Char! ---- (Bushcraft / Self-Reliance / Prepping)

Hello Folks,

A quick addition to my previous post on how you could possibly manufacture char-cloth in a SHTF/survival situation.

Making charred material for flint & steel and/or solar magnifying glass fire starting relies on the process being completely void of oxygen.

The 'triangle of fire' requires oxygen - fuel - heat.

Remove any one of those three key components and you will not have fire. For example, adding water to a fire will remove the heat but also starve it of oxygen, that's why it's such an excellent extinguisher. In the case of charring, removal of the oxygen allows the material to carbonize due to the intense heat without it bursting into flames. As all the volatile gases have been removed during the charring process, the charred material will glow (burn but no flame) with little or no smoke once ignited.

So here is a brief slide-show of a possible quick-fix solution for the charring of either 100% cotton material or punk-wood (spongy, rotten wood) during an SHTF or survival situation.

[cut the top section off of each can, be careful as the metal is sharp]

[pinch one of the can's rim, making the circumference smaller than the other can]

[insert your preferred material for charring, don't pack it all too tight]

[insert the 'pinched' can into the other one]

[slide the cans together leaving only a small 'vent']
