CryptoCoffee 5: The Prince of Borneo

This is my fifth in a series of blogs where I talk to a Crypto/Steemit Enthusiast over Coffee

”Yes CryptoCurator, I have an interesting connection to The Sultan of Brunei, but first, more importantly, this doesn’t matter, as I am the Prince of Borneo, and your speaking with him instead!!!” (written with help of cryptocurator poetic license).

Today I’m writing about my first conversation with @danieldoughty on Discord. We started with a video chat on discord but this soon descended to voice-only when his chords turned into a 1980’s synthesiser pop song, much like Cher in her song “Believe”. So in summary it was not kind to my ears to continue on this course… human rights and all that…..!

We had so much to talk about and I have summarised for the purposes of the blog to:

  1. Daniel Doughty one of the first Community Approved @Steem-Ambassadors
  2. Promo-Steem Project Work in Borneo, Malaysia
  3. Project X
  4. Alternative Financing for NGO/ Social Enterprise
  5. Mission Impossible Borneo Style

Introduction

Daniel started on Steemit in June 2017 and took a break before re-starting with renewed vigour in Jan 2018 – and has been very influential in bringing the Borneo Steemian population to around 250. The gamechanger moment for Daniel that brought renewed enthusiasm for Steemit came in Dec 2017 – the price of Steem and SBD was double what is it now and his wife @viverridae bought a watch, a gold bracelet and dinner for two, all from earned SBD.
Daniel works across Borneo and with other Malaysian Steemians to encourage retention in the platform and is now a major advocate for PoweringUp and keeping that Steem Power in the system until the Steem price is ten or twenty fold what it is now.

Daniel Doughty one of the first Community Approved @Steem-Ambassadors

Daniel is based in Sabah in Borneo (Malaysian side of Borneo). Daniel’s @steem-ambassador application went live for community approval here 9 days ago – and so it seems to me he has been community approved to be a @Steem-Ambassador. He will be one of the very first to get past this stage. An official announcement on this topic would come from the @steem-ambassador account in the next 14 days I would have thought.

As far as we are both aware he is the only @Steem-Ambassador in Borneo, and at the time of writing perhaps the only one in Malaysia. He does have other Malaysian contacts such as @calebleejl who has applied and is a few weeks behind in the application process. Furthermore, I’m planning on speaking with Daniels childhood friend @bitrocker2020, who is properly rocking #promo-steem and #teammalaysia at the moment, and as he is a prime candidate for @steem-ambassador too.

Daniel was really excited about the @steem-ambassador position and I think he will make a great Ambassador. Maybe he can add this further credential to the title of Prince of Borneo!

Promo-Steem – in Borneo, Malaysia

Daniel has worked collaboratively with others to create a structure in meetings with Steemians and Non Steemians.
The structure being:

  • Bootcamps which deals with initial registrations and key user guidance for the first few weeks on Steemit

Followed later by:

  • Masterclass which are designed to help users get the help they might need to become better writer bloggers and to add more value to the eco-system.

Daniel has the help of @bitrocker2020 @maverickfoo @viverridae @papanog @wilsonkoh @veenang in the organisation and running of bootcamps and masterclasses.

Aside from events, bootcamps and masterclasses you can see Steemian Meetups are popular and a review of Daniels blog and from the photographs you can sense the real importance of keeping the meet ups warm and loving community events.

We have shared missions so people can tag #promo-steem and #teammalaysia when posting high quality posts about promoting Steem and the Steem Blockchain in Malaysia

Project X

One of the events planned for the future with his much anticipated @Steem-Ambassador status is to work towards a major event in September. I was lucky enough to hear of some of those plans. They are currently under wraps at the minute so let’s call it Project Steem X as it is still secret but watch this space for news of an event for Steemians and New Steemians alike. I understand that @bitrocker2020 and @danieldoughty are working on much of the material for future release on Steemit.

Alternative Financing of NGO/ Social Enterprise

Daniel has a great vision of Steemit/Blockchain funded NGOs. He sees failed attempts at pleading-based fiat fundraising by local NGO’s. They have important missions to protect the amazing wildlife of Borneo such as the famous Orangutan, Pygmy Elephant and Rhinoceros.

He sees these NGO’s as having a bank of quality content and photography and they could leverage off that to earn Steem and become a powerful advocate of blockchain aided global community funding to protect the wildlife.

The beauty of the Steem blockchain being totally transparent could mean less funds are lost with intermediaries, middlemen and bureaucracy. Daniel is actively working on approaching the local NGOs – and it helps that he has many years of experience of running a boutique PR agency.

Mission Impossible Borneo Style

For a bit of fun -watch out for a couple of challenges I’m setting for Daniel here:

  1. He is visiting Sanadakan in the next 7-14 days – where there will be a Steemian meet-up. Sandakan is a key home of the Orangutan – and I’m challenging Daniel to become the first to get a photograph of an Orangutan flying the flag of Steemit.

  2. His great-grandfather was a close adviser to the former Sultan of Brunei. Now as far as I’m concerned that is a foot in the door with the current Sultan. Now wouldn’t it be good if the current Sultan would bestow some wealth into the Steemit eco-system. Any cute ideas out in the community about how this could be approached!!?? Flyer drop at the front gate! Leaflet under the Rolls Royce windscreen wiper!

Thanks for the fun conversation @DanielDoughty – I look forward to working/collaborating/sharing with you over the coming months.

A few more people know about the Prince of Borneo now!
Oh and just thinking of these “royal connections” I have come across a few these last few months King of Tea, Queen Le Vita, Lord Buckethead ………
