So you were binge-watching Stranger Things and ate too many jalapeño chips. We've all been there. Now you're thinking of going to sleep but your stomach is screaming at you for all the wrongs you've done it. Brush off the jalapeño dust and throw back one of these unexpected reflux remedies.
1. Avocado with Sugar
I kid you not.
I learned this one from a Eritrean woman transplanted in the Middle East. She was quick to come to my rescue when I contracted a major case of gastric woe from drinking contaminated water.
Chalk it's effectiveness up to the miracle of plant fats. Here's what you do: Mash up half of an avocado with a couple teaspoons of sugar. Eat it with a spoon.
2. Yogurt, Water and Salt (aka the Mediterranean drink known as Ayran)
I also learned this one in the Middle East from a Lebanese Civil War veteran who drank it every night to quell his PTSD-related ulcer.
Mix a quarter cup of plain, whole milk yogurt with a pinch of salt and a quarter cup of water. Add in a teaspoon of shredded mint and two tablespoons diced cucumber extra freshness and stomach soothing.
3. Pickle Juice
This one came from a U.S. veteran on U.S. soil. He passed on the tip when he heard my kid had reflux-related screaming fits nightly. We'd been giving him turmeric milk, which is delicious and wonderful, but time-consuming to make fresh each evening. We decided to let him sip pickle juice from the jar. It seems like it would have the exact opposite effect, but it worked like a charm.
Now get back to those jalapeño chips. Netflix isn't going to watch itself.
