Space Weather, Planet Hunter
The last 24 hours on the Earth Facing disc shows calm solar winds, no sunspots and not much plasma activity. The equatorial coronal hole is getting closer to center disc, which means it will soon start sending a stream that will affect Earth. The incoming limb is still showing plenty of activity, but we will have to see how it handles the Earth Facing Quiet. The Planetary K-index is still in the low green levels, setting us up for increased earthquake activity.
Earthquakes and volcanoes of note
- 5.9 magnitude earthquake near Ternate, Maluku Utara, Indonesia
- 5.1 magnitude earthquake near the South Sandwhich islands - down near Antarctica
- 4.4 magnitude earthquake near Zinjibār, Abyan, Yemen in the Gulf of Aden
Space Objects
No new Near-Earth Objects(NEO) added to the database today. Apparently the 2018 GE3 that passed by yesterday has caused a bit of an uproar. Even though it was listed as the size of a jet airplane, they are saying it was closer to the size of a stadium. A smaller “Tunguska-class” leveled a forest in Siberia in 1908.
Today’s Launches
- Falcon 9 • TESS - A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket will launch NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). The TESS mission will identify planets ranging from Earth-sized to gas giants, orbiting a wide range of stellar types and orbital distances. The principal goal of the TESS mission is to detect small planets with bright host stars in the solar neighborhood, so that detailed characterizations of the planets and their atmospheres can be performed. TESS will be stationed in a high-Earth elliptical orbit.
