Mineral Mondays

Obsidian is a semi-precious gemstone used by humans for hundreds of thousands of years. Also known as volcanic glass, it has some qualities you are probably not aware of.

Obsidian blades and arrowheads date back 10,000 of thousands of years. It's thought humans have been using obsidian for much longer due to it's ability to form razor sharp edges. The oldest known discovery of usage dates to 700,000 years in Ethiopia.

The Gem 宝石

As mentioned, obsidian is volcanic glass comprised of silica. It has been used in jewelry for thousands of years, but it is not a mineral. It's actually a mineraloid, which means it is not a crystal. It is silica, glass. Some other mineraloid examples are opals and pearls.

While most of the time it is black, It comes in a few other colors and patterns too. Snowflake obsidian contains white inclusions of cristobalite. Mahogany obsidian is a brown version like the image below. Blue is one of the rarest colors.

One amazing fact about obsidian is it is sharper than the sharpest steel blade. The edge can be 3 nanometers wide! It's so sharp surgeons are experimenting using it as a scalpel.

This is a new section I am adding to Mineral Mondays, where to find the gems & minerals and my own personal stories of hunting for them.

One of the most famous localities for obsidian in California is Obsidian Dome just outside of Mammoth, Ca. It's an extinct volcano that never really made it big. It did however ooze out a lot of obsidian. Infact, the cone of the volcano is lined with obsidian.

Just above Obsidian Dome there is another small caldera. All around this area you can find obsidian scattered about. We stopped by on our way to Lake Tahoe one year. There was so much obsidian we had to pick and choose what to take. There where boulders of it everywhere, but breaking some off was a challenge. It was actually pretty hard. So we picked up about 5 specimens and continued on our way. I had pictures, but my USB-C adapter is not working so I can't pull them off my back up drive. I'd recommend stopping by Obsidian Dome if you are ever in Mammoth or driving by on Rt. 395.
