American Gods

When I first heard that Neil Gaiman's novel, American Gods, was getting adapted as a series, I was both excited and worried. Having finally watched the first season, I am happy to say that it is an excellent treatment of the original. It has been about a decade since I read the book, and from what I recall, the series deviates a lot in terms of plot, but it does manage to capture the feel of the book, the idea that there is a whole universe that lies just beneath the surface fo things, and that is just a step away in the right direction (or the wrong one, for that matter)

All the actors deliver a set of amazing performances, and the plot takes a bit of time to get going, mainly because of all the characters and concepts that need to be introduced. Having some familiarity with a wide variety of myth is rewarded through catching the various reference scattered throughout the series, but even somebody unfamiliar with the myths that inspired it should be able to enjoy it.
