The differences and similarities between Physical and Spiritual Pain

Pain is something that has a wide range of perception and experience, yet has one thing in common despite its multitude of sources and interpretations. That being the Human nervous system.

I wanted to talk about the difference between spiritual pain and physical pain, so this article will describe that from my own personal perspective.

Physical Pain

Although most people hate experiencing pain on a physical level it is quite necessary for our well being and adaptive survival instincts.

When we are physically damaged in any way, we receive a painful feedback from our body that gets relayed via the nervous system.

For the body this is nothing more than simple informational feedback.

This indicates and triggers a response within us that tells us something is wrong and something needs to be done to either treat the situation or deviate from taking any more further actions in the same way that might cause the same damage.

For example, you place your hand on a hot stove and get burned, now you know not to do that because it damages the body.

If there wasn't any pain feedback you just might not see what is happening to the hand and be left with a dysfunctional or severely burned limb.

Spiritual Pain

Spirituality is a sphere where physicality take s a back seat. Most would say that the terminology (Spiritual Pain) must be something that doesn't have anything to do with our Physical aspect, but that would mean that our thoughts aren't connected to a physical vessel.

If someone yells at us we start to feel the anxiety build up in the body or stress. Varies based on the individual.

The same thing happens with spirituality but there isn't anyone yelling at us.

It is the natural responses to our own doings that trigger certain emotional responses within us, hence there is some feedback happening in our nervous system.

So with that said, we see spiritual pain is actually heightened stress states caused by nonexternal sources. Like experiencing the stress and anxiety of real physical pain but without the body being injured.

In General

Summed up, the pain itself is a compendium of emotions, well of course, mainly the negative ones. The positive emotions have a different terminology "Inner Bliss". But that is a whole other aspect, yet somewhat the same ^^.

That is the main reason why some people say that we can't be fully happy by having physical belongings, that's only one side of the whole thing.

I will dedicate a future article to explain this in full details and see about writing some positive things someone can do to manage inner emotional turbulence. Even if he/she isn't a dedicated person towards spiritual practices.
