History of Volleyball (Sports#3)

Hi guys how are you? I will start with a short story of how and why I played Volleyball and prefer it to Basketball and Football so if you want to only check the history skip this part and go directly into History of Voleyball

This time I will write about Volleyball and its history. Although I had played basketball for two years (when I 15) in a team and football in general (I was in a team for a year) I was getting bored by those game easily or I didn’t like it so much after a curtain extend.

As you probably know I always share my personal opinion so you won’t hear any lies from me. A reason I didn’t liked Basketball that much is that with the slightest touch to the opponent it was considered foul and for the exact opposite reason football. In football a lot and I will say that again, TOO MANY FOULS THAT NONE GIVES A DAMN, pushing, kicking and no foul at all.

Imagine playing among friends and a slow kick happens. The reaction of the others or the one did it would be a laugh like ‘’it’s ok’’, ‘’ I didn’t want it’’, ‘’ come on you are ok’’

Imagine now be a pro and play while having mostly anyone kicking you or grab you by the clothes or even pretend like they are hurt and the referee do nothing!

Don’t start the hate now or the ‘’you are too Soft’’ things!

Anyway at High school and to be exact at ages between 15-17 (before I start college) it was common at the gymnastic class that we had to play either Football or Basketball. Instead of that our teacher suggested to try and play Volleyball both boys and girls with him teaching us the basic rules and serve as a referee. Everyone wasn’t too excited at first but within 10 minutes I can say that we all enjoyed it like a free chocolate! The moment you hit that ball with your hand make it pass through the net and your opponents makes you feel really powerful and proud at the same time while when you miss to cross the net you just laugh ( I am talking about friendly games to the official ones)

HISTORY OF VOLLEYBALL

First of all Volleyball is a game between 2 teams of six players competing each other with a net separate them (although there are some other types like bitch volley or grass volley).

  •  Each team takes points by Scoring by grounding the ball to the enemy field
  • The same person touches the ball twice
  • Catching the ball
  • Four consecutive contacts by the same team
  • Touching the net
  • Crossing with your foot the boundary line when serving

Everything started back at 1895 by William G. Morgan a YMCA physical teacher that created a new game named ‘’Mintonette’’ , an indoor game that as basketball that time it was played by any number of players and it cause a combination of many sports like ( Basketball, Handball, Tennis)

Note that basketball introduced 4 years earlier

When the first game was played the rules that William G Morgan had made concerned a 1.98 meters net, no limits to how many times each time will touch the ball and if it hit the net then it was considered a foul.

In 1916 Philippines introduced the set and spike skills and a year later the game final score changed from 21 to 15. After 3 years the three hits and not hitting from the back row rule was formed.

America and Canada was one of the first countries to adopt Volleyball and in 1928 the United States Volleyball Association was formed (USVBA later USA Volleyball)

In 1947 FIVB was established (Federation Internationale De Volleyball)

In 1949 the World championship took place in Prague organized by FIVB

By the end of 1951 more than 50 million people played volleyball in over 60 countries and because of that popularity 6 years later Volleyball became and Olympic game sport that took place at 1964 Olympics in Tokyo. As the game grew more the association of Volleyball professionals (AVP) and Women’s professional (WPVA) created in 1983 and 1986.

I don’t want to tire you with more dates

Why is volleyball good for us?

First of all it’s a good exercise to stay fit and burn calories as most of the sports. Your heart is healthier and you work and strengthen your upper body, your arm muscles and shoulders. Your lower body is trained as well, just think of the squats you do while take the passing stance. Ofc as the other sports in volley too, you improve your communication skills, you learn what team means and how to treat your teammates as well as your ‘’enemy’’ team. Moreover, you relieved from your suppressed emotions and enjoy the game.

But those benefits are for every sport, what is that different thing that makes it better?

I am not certain cause it depends on the person but as I said at the beginning of the post when I hit with all my might the ball at the serve or when I ‘’destroy’’ everyone with my spike I feel powerful, proud and at the same time I enjoy it. If you still insist for difference I can say the eye-hand coordination and that is happening because when you are in attack you have to look with your eyes the right spot to hit the ball in order none to catch it and when the time comes your hand must move instantly without your eyes looking away. As such when you play defense while your eyes follow the ball your body and hands must move quickly.

I hope you learned something you didnt know today, if you want more have patience i am here for you, in the meanwhile if you want to see other posts of this section just click the football history and the basketball history i made recently
