❓Answering Common Questions: How do I get more Votes? - Part 1: Meeting People and Building Relationships 👋

While creating good content is important,
it's only half the battle.

Most of us don't have a large following or name recognition when we first start on Steemit. This means that you will have to not only get known by other users, but also get them to cast their votes for you. This guide will cover ways and places to build your relationship with other Steemians.

Q: I'm just here to make money on my posts. Why do I need to meet people?

I hate to break the news, but when most of us start on Steemit, we're not famous and don't have a following coming in with us. Our posts blend in with the thousands of other posts being published each day. While it is important to create strong content with a good title and thumbnail image, that alone isn't enough to start getting us votes.

Let's use a YouTube or Twitch streamer as an example. How long do you watch somebody that just sits there, staring at their screen, saying nothing. Pretty boring right?

Have you ever noticed how the good ones interact with their followers? Reading and responding to those in chat...reacting to subscriptions or donations...consistently having some form of interaction with the camera. While this are important to the content they're creating being strong, it's also how they build a relationship with you! Over time, you not only check back for new content, likely follow them, but also LIKE THEM as a person. This is what you're shooting for...making an honest connection with people and ideally getting them to like who you are and what you do.

THESE will be your best supporters!!

Q: Where can I start meeting people then?

1. Comments, Comments and Comments!!

This is one of the best places to start. Finding posts by other authors on topics you find interesting and leave a good comment. Really try to put something that shows you read their post like:

  • What was your favorite part of the post
  • Is there anything that might need clarifying or want to see more of
  • Ask for their opinion on something relevant

While it's ok to just put, "Great Post!"...it likely won't be noticed and definitely not start a conversation with the author.

Think about the comments you get on your posts....which ones get you to check out the commentors blog? BE THAT PERSON!

2. Steemit Chat

Steemit Chat was one of the first options we had available to talk with others (and promote our posts) outside of Steemit itself. When you first join, you'll be in two rooms; general (where you can chat with others, no post links) and post promotion (where you can put your post links.)

Click Here to Enter Steemit Chat!!

In the left hand column, you'll find a button that says 'More Channels' which will give you a full list of other channels you can join. Some are more general (applying to any topic) and others are more specific, like Photography or Travel. I strongly recommend paying attention to rules the top of each channel as you join (if there are any.)

Steemit Chat maintained by @riverhead along with @pfunk , @gtg and others handling some of the administration duties. All three of these guys are Steem Witnesses.

3. Steemit Discord Text and Voice Channels

First...if you're new to using Discord, you'll need to sign up at: https://discordapp.com/ . I do recommend downloading the app instead of using it in the browser, but both do work. Once you're signed into Discord, simply click the invitation links that I'll provide for you below to different channels. For those new to using this, here is a short video introduction to make your life easier:
