STEEM Food Tours #9 : Boran (Classic Thai Street Food) - Petaling Jaya, Malaysia

Today is a day worth celebrating! Because I've won a quest! So, my boyfriend and I celebrated my achievement at Boran, a classic thai street food restaurant near to our place.

My review about Boran will consist of

  1. Food and Menu
  2. Location
  3. Decoration
  4. Services
  5. For more info

This restaurant is located in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia. Petaling Jaya is next to Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia so there are a lot of great restaurants waiting to be discovered.

1. Food and Menu

There aren't much choices in terms of food and drinks, but the quality beats the quantity. When there are less choices, less frustration on what to eat and chefs can specialize!

Their signature food is obviously at the top, Classic Pork Noodle and Thai Milk tea.

We have ordered 4 of their food,

My food is Tom Sap Pork Ribs with Thai Mee Hoon which costs RM12.50

What's inside? It consists of Mee Hoon (rice noodle), pork ribs, oyster mushrooms and fish cakes. The clear Tom Yum soup is cooked with ginger, lemongrass, dried chili and other unseen ingredients.

Do not let its appearances to cheat you, the soup looks clear but it's very spicy! Do not eat this if you cannot tolerate spicy.

My boyfriend ordered Braised Pork Belly with White Rice which costs RM10.50, slightly cheaper than mine.

When you're in Malaysia, eat the Malaysian way. The braised soup is poured on top white rice and food in that bowl is eaten along with the rice.

That bowl consists of half braised egg, braised tofu and braised pork belly. Everything is braised!

Braise is a cooking method where you fry lightly then stew slowly.

Both of us shared a drink and a dessert.
Of course, I chose to drink their Thai Milk Tea which costs RM5.30!

I love the taste of their Thai Milk Tea, it's sweet and you could taste mostly milk. I think they put more milk than tea. Thai restaurants are famous of their tom yum, thai tea and thai milk tea, so make sure you get one whenever you're in any Thai restaurants!

Our dessert is Grass Jelly which costs RM4.50

It consist of ice (half shaved, half cube), grass jelly (it's not made of grass) and "gula melaka". "Gula Melaka" is a type of sugar that is named after Melaka, a famous state in Malaysia. It is brown in color and taste sweeter than a normal sugar.

The combination of ice which has diluted the "gula melaka" taste + the blandness and tenderness of grass jelly makes this dessert a perfect food to start the meal! We ate this at the beginning, hahaha

Oh, I forgot, we've also ordered the 5th food, a side dish called Deep Fried Pork Belly which costs RM17.50

The skin is crispy and the flesh is tender and soft. Eat this with the chili sauce is da best!

In conclusion, the price is affordable for most middle-class people. Our total bill for 5 dishes is RM50.30. For a hearty meal this price is not bad at all! Definitely value for money.

2. Location

Restaurant Address: Boran Seapark, 25 Jalan 21/11A, Petaling Jaya
Google Maps location: https://goo.gl/maps/mAyDpQGvSJ22
Waze location: https://waze.com/ul/hw2838qpww

The best way to reach here is by train + taxi. Here's how.

Take LRT Kelana Jaya line and alight at Taman Paramount LRT station. Then use GrabCar on your phone to get a taxi.

This restaurant offers RM2.00 off on Lunch Set if you come using public transport (either Taxi, GrabCar or Bus). Just show the receipt and you'll get the offer.

The second best way is drive. But there are limited parking spaces around this area, and this area is famous of local good food! We have circled around 2-3 times just to find a parking space.

If there aren't any parking spaces, Malaysians will double park. Double park means you park beside a car that's in the parking space. This restaurant is brilliant! They have 2 cameras out of their shop to monitor double parks. If there are people honking, customers will know whether their car is blocking from the monitors.

3. Decoration

This shop's owner must be a die-hard COCA-COLA fan. There are coca-cola merchandise everywhere!

The walls are full of COCA-COLA paintings and the bottles!

4. Services

If you're queueing, there are chairs for you to sit while waiting outside of the entrance.

They're a Boost, a cashless payment app partner, so pay with Boost to get 50% cashback.

The speed of food is served is quite high. We waited about 10 - 15 minutes for all of our dishes. This is a non-peak hour speed, so you might need to wait longer during peak hours.

The staff's service are so-so, nothing extraordinary.
