I've been watching this metric for about 6 months now and I think it's one of the most important ones in the entire Steemit ecosystem. More important than the current price of STEEM, IMHO.
The rewards fund is the total amount of STEEM available for rewards for the next 7 days window.
So this fund is more of an indicator of the potential rewards, not of what you could make right now.
I hope someone smart enough will make someday an "opportunity index" of the Steemit ecosystem, one that will take into account the price of STEEM / SBD, the size of the rewards fund, the power up / power down ratios (and a bunch of other metrics that are slipping my mind right now) and, based on this, make some sort of visual depicting "potential profitability".
Until that, let's just rejoice in the fact that there were more than 780,000 STEEM in the rewards fund at the moment of writing
Given the recent rise in price of STEEM, I expect this to trend lower during the next week, though. The interaction should increase once the STEEM will stay afloat of $1, a very important psychological layer.
