I know how I felt when I first gained access to steemit. I looked at the platform, it looked very simple but to my surprise, this is one of the twisted social media platforms out there. There are not many functions you can do at the starting and you will wonder about various things like - STEEM, UPVOTES, SBDs, REWARDS, STEEM POWER, VOTING POWER, BANDWIDTH, UNIVERSE, GOD, PROKARYOTES and MITOCHONDRIA. Don't worry - Steem on and Read on. I am preparing this series where I will help New Steemians called #Minnows, to understand how Steemit works, what are the good practices, some book rules and how you can earn STEEM and SBDs to change your life. ⛔ PASSWORD

Steemit account is not just another social media website account. It's your wallet also! The first thing you are going to do after logging in is to SAVE YOUR PASSWORD. Take a print out of it, write it on a piece of paper, save it on a remote server in Antarctica. It's valuable and cannot be lost. Read the below STEEMIT RULES, the only thing that matters now -

I hope now it's clear why Steemit is setting rules on not losing your password because they cannot recover it. That's how the platform is made. You lose it, it's gone with those $1000 of SBDs and STEEM you are going to make in the coming days, months or weeks.

Tip💰: I use LASTPASS.COM to store my passwords and if you are using chrome as a browser then you can download its extension. It will make your life easier than ever before.

🚬 SETUP
----------------------------------------------

First, get your sh*t together! The section is pretty small still it takes good amount of time to set up for a new user. If you are a Social Media Explorer, you shall not take more than a few minutes.
Go to settings, you should then set PROFILE PICTURE URL, COVER IMAGE URL, DISPLAY NAME, ABOUT, LOCATION and WEBSITE.

😎SET YOUR PROFILE & COVER IMAGE

✅Steemit Profile Picture is made up of circular dimensions. Go to your Instagram Profile and right click on your profile picture as shown below. Click on "Copy Image Address" :

✅Paste the address in PROFILE PICTURE URL, under Public Profile Settings of your steemit profile.

✅If you want to set any image other than Instagram Profile Image then you can use postimage.org to upload your picture and get the URL once it is uploaded. Set the URL as done in above steps - you are good to go.

✅Your can set your cover image in similar manner. The suggested size of cover image is 1680x252. @ninjace made a great post on "How To Change Your Steemit Cover Image + 5 FREE COVER IMAGES. Check that out, it will help! Yes.

👣DISPLAY NAME & OTHER DETAILS

✅One of the most important section of your #Steemit profile. Whenever someone clicks on your photo and comes to see your profile, they will be face-to-face with your DISPLAY NAME, the ABOUT section you wrote in a few words or phrases to give the reader a slight idea about who you are, what you do, your interests, your feelings, where people could reach you on other social media websites or maybe your own website. Just a few words are enough to do the MAGIC. So, show some!

🤗 INTRODUCE YOURSELF

That's the first thing you do once your initial setup is done. Now get your freshly brewed coffee & sit on the table with your laptop to start preparing your Introduction Post. This can be a game changer or life maker - might provide you lots of upvotes, comments, followers & huge amount of SBDs and STEEM POWER. That's what you want, right? Go ahead and do it then.

Ideally this should be your first post but you can wait till you completely understand what is to be written and how! To interact with the community you need to put time and effort to create a detailed piece about yourself. For this post, you need to spend 3x or 4x the time you are gonna spend in creating other posts, so this is important.To get some idea how your first #INTRODUCEYOURSELF post should look like, I am listing down my favorites -

Add a tag below while drafting your post called #IntroduceYourself as it is one of the top 5 tags on Steemit. Other than this you can add tags like #Steemit, #Life, #Blog, #Travel, #Cryptocurrency or any other relevant tag you can see on the left side of your Home Page. Do not add any irrelevant tag to your post. For that matter, do not do anything irrelevant on the platform because it will decrease your bandwidth. Trust me, you don want that - I will explain later.

Tip💰: Do not forget to add your photo in that. A picture of you smiling and maybe a paper in your hand with some beautiful message written on that. "But that's clicheeeeeee!", No, that's NOT! Maybe you can talk about your #life, your goals, your journey in this amazing world so far - RELATABLE STUFF. Add lots of pictures explaining different components of your journey would help the community to know you better.

When you are done with all that fancy stuff, it's time to get more technical. Understanding STEEMIT requires great deal of patience. It takes hours, days and maybe months for some people to fully understand the functionality and worth of this rocking platform. But I can assure you 100% that this is going to change your life for GOOD. So hop on and enjoy the ride!

Right now, I will mention words or phrases that we use on Steemit very frequently. I will try to explain in the simplest form possible that even your grandma will understand. Let's go one by one with each term, in very brief manner.

✅WALLET

It contains your money that you earn from Steemit in the form of STEEM, STEEM DOLLARS (SBD) and STEEM POWER.

✅STEEM

Steemit uses this currency which can be transferred to anyone, anywhere, anytime in just 3 seconds. It can be traded on cryptocurrency exchanges. We can convert this to SBDs or POWER UP our STEEM POWER.

✅STEEM DOLLARS

Current market price of this token is above $5 right now. You can buy or sell SBDs on exchanges or earn through the upvotes you get on your blogs or comments.

✅STEEM POWER

This is the most important component of your Steemit Wallet. More Steem Power you have, the more influence you will have on the community and your payouts in the future. You will be able to attract more followers, more upvotes, more comments on your posts. This is the only thing you need to accumulate in the starting. You can buy this directly or power up through STEEM. I will explain about this in detail how it works and how it is important to POWER UP a fraction of your earnings after taking out your profit but for now, please understand that this is better than the "HE-MAN" power.

✅CURATION REWARDS

These rewards you will get when you upvote a post that performs great on steemit. Might reach hot or trending section. Most of the curation reward will be taken by people who upvotes the post in first 15minutes. So that's a great tip for you to note. They will come in the form of STEEM POWER. Now you know what needs to done, right?.

✅AUTHOR REWARDS

_When you write a post, you might get some upvotes. Generally speaking around 70-80% of the money shown on the post you made will be your Author rewards in the form of STEEM DOLLARS and STEEM POWER. It will take 7 days for each payout to complete its term. So have patience and keep on STEEMING.

✅VOTING POWER

Voting power is meter that is decided by how much STEEM POWER you have and how many votes you have done so far. I would suggest you to keep your voting power above 85% at the starting and once you have enough STEEM POWER, you can play around with it. Everyday 20% of voting power will get replenished so vote wisely. Live well!

✅BANDWIDTH

Many a times you will get a notification down below on steemit website that "Bandwidth Limit Exceeded" which means that you have done a few actions too many times. Initially, don't get too excited and use your bandwidth wisely. It will replenish itself daily or will get increased when you POWER UP or when you will claim rewards. It will give you some more space in the blockchain to perform operations on Steemit. You can check your voting power and bandwidth on steemd.com.
