When I first started with Steemit my assumption was that if I just posted content that I would automatically get upvotes (it actually worked but that is another story). I soon found out that it doesn't quite work that way. The best way to get some attention for your posts is through post promotion.
There are a couple of different pages on Steemit, I like to call these "views" but most people call them pages. The pages are sorted into different categories:
Home page
Here you can view the latest posts by the people you follow in chronological order.New page
Here you can see all the latest posts in chronological order.Hot page
This page displays the popular posts, the popularity of these posts is decided by the number and weight of the received. These posts are most likely to make it to the next level (trending) if the post keep getting upvotes. The ranking as far as I can see is based on the amount, weight and age of the received upvotes.Trending page
This is the page where you want your post to end up, the page with the high earning posts. The ranking depends on the age of the post and the pending payout.Promoted
By promoting your post you can get it on the promoted page. I have tried it once or twice but decided that it wasn't worth the effort. There are better promotion strategies available.
After you submit your post it will show up on the New page. Your post will be visible for all Steemians to see but only for a short time. As new posts are submitted yours will fall down the list and disappear.
Your post will also show up on the home page of your followers, the more followers you have, the greater the exposure of your post.
If people think your post has value they will upvote or even resteem your post. If you receive enough upvotes your post will go to the hot page for extra exposure. Here other Steemians will be able to see your post.
If someone decides to resteem your post than your post will show up in the home page of the Steemians that are following the person who resteemed the post. This will lead to even more visibility of your post depending on the amount of followers of the resteemer.
It is also important to note that you can zoom in on certain topics. By clicking on the tags you are redirected to the new, hot and trending pages of that topic and you will only see posts with that particular tag. E.g. I post a lot about gaming so it is important for me to have as much exposure on the hot gaming page as possible.
Post Promotion
Let's start with the things you shouldn't do.
Spam links to your post in general chat on discord or steemchat
There are special sections for post promotion use these for your promotion activities.Post unwanted links to your posts when you reply on another Steemian's Post.
That is just plain rude.Spam other people's wallets with memos.
Just don't do it!Blindly use resteem services
Just because the service has a couple of thousand followers does not mean that they are on the up-and-up, always check the legitimacy of the service. My thumb rule is that to check if the service advertises by sending memo's to people's wallets, if this is the case then they are not worth my time. (my advise is to use with @resteembot)Use irrelevant tags just because they are popular. e.g when you write a post about trees don't use the cryptocurrency tag.
What you should do
join The minnow support project (P.A.L)
This is an active support group for minnows. They give advise, can check your posts and on their discord channel they have an upvote section. If you register on the channel and submit your link you will receive upvotes on your post.use resteembot
For a very small fee this smart bot will resteem your post, at time of writing @resteembot has over 2000 followers. This will increase your chances of getting upvotes.Use an upvote bot
An upvote bot is an account that you pay a fee and in return you will get an upvote (or upvotes depending on the service). The benefits are that you get an immediate return on investment. You will get an upvote that is worth more than what you paid. Even better is that these upvotes can get you a spot on the hot page.
There are a lot of upvote bots. The ones I use the most are:
Minnowbooster
Randowhale
Bellyrub
- join community projects
Joining a community project like circle of friends, qurator or make-a-whale will help you make some more friends and all these projects will help you gain something.
Join @qurator to get some spotlight on your posts
- Post promotion on steemchat and discord
If you are part of a Minnow or support project and they have a steemchat channel or discord channel you can use the Post promotion section to promote your posts. It is also recommended to visit these channels for some interaction with your fellow Steemians.
- Use proper tags so that the topic can be found by readers who are interested in the topics you are addressing.
Just writing and posting will not automatically translate into upvotes.
The best way to get a large number of upvotes is is to try and start a chainreaction. The more people are able to see your post, upvote and resteem it, the bigger the chance that even more people will do the same.
However it is up to you to light the fuse, you can do this by writing quality posts and actively promote yourself and your blogs.
