Do you have a reason, or many reasons, why you want to lose weight?
I’m re-vamping my weight loss coaching work now and realized I have a big hole is the program! Most of what I has done in the past has been one-on-one. By the time people get to me, they are distraught and already have their reasons defined. But if I am to work effectively you need to have your goals in mind.
It is very important that you define what matters to you and keep this in your thoughts. It’s so easy to let the days go by without thinking. Successful weight loss requires you to stay focused. This way you do not cut yourself slack.
Examples of reasons to lose weight.
These go from bad to worse depending on your weight and life situation. These are a few reasons I know of based on fear:
Overweight people say these things:
I have always been thin. I looked in the mirror and realized I am not thin now. I want to catch this while it is not too bad and take control of my life.
I went to college and gained the “Freshman 15.” When I went home for the summer, everyone noticed and commented. I never wanted that to happen again. So lost weight that summer, and then I looked up “How To Eat Healthy in a Dorm Room” and applied those principals to my second year. Ever since that experience, I have paid attention to my health. My weight has never been problem again because I do not let things get out of control.
Obese people say these things:
My husband called me a “fat pig” and said he wants a divorce. He is not like this. He has supported me in every way for 25 years, and I cannot believe this is what he thinks of me. I need to lose weight right now to save my marriage.
I took my kids to a theme park. I am too fat to go on any rides. The attendants would not even let me get on to try, and said the bar would not fit over my stomach. I was so embarrassed and my kids were very upset. On top of this, I could barely keep up with all the walking, and now I am so tired I can hardly think or move.
Every time I go to a doctor’s appointment they talk to me about weight loss surgery now. I do not want weight loss surgery and I hate when they pressure me like this.
I almost died when my stomach jammed the steering wheel and I could not make a turn on the freeway. My life flashed before me and I decided to lose weight or die trying, since I might be about to die anyway.
Here are a few reasons to lose weight based on hope:
Overweight people say these things:
I am getting married in a few months and I want to look good in a wedding dress.
Summer is coming and I want to look good in a bathing suit.
I want to enjoy playing with my children/grandchildren.
I’m going on a vacation and I want to be able to do all the activities.
Obese people do not have hope.
Obese and morbidly obese people are starting from a place of fear. This can be a good thing if you focus on that fear and make it work for you. This is the reason my coaching works. Obese people hear my story and see my photos and take the leap to believe that they can do this if I did.
