When I was in private school in Washington D.C. in 6th and 7th grade, we got this extensive list of books to read over the summer. But these were pretty long books like To Kill A Mockingbird. You pretty much had to read the whole book to be able to write the book report. 

That is probably one of the main reasons they had you write those, to check if you really read them.
