Welcome to Alphabet Adventures a journey through the dictionary Episode 3 .
I you didn't catch the first episode you can find it here basically it tells you what I am doing and why.
I have decided that the following quote will be a permanent fixture as I feel really captures the power of language.
“If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them”
Genesis 11: 6
Today's Adventure.
Ability
Ability
n. 1 The capacity or power to do something.
2 cleverness, talent.
Etymology: Originating in Old French and Medieval Latin the words ableté and habilis these words carried the meanings "state or condition of being able/capacity to act" and "easy to manage" respectively.
So lets have a look at those two meanings first regards the state or condition and the second talks of ease.
I reiterate those two parts because I don't want us to confuse ability with skill.
Ability is a gift of nature, God, or flying spaghetti monster which every you choose to believe in while skill is that which we build upon base state or condition of ability.
Real World Example
Meet Usain Bolt fastest man in the world, his strength, speed, prowess, and dedication as an athlete are defiantly something to be admired but does he have a secret advantage?
No I'm not suggesting that Usain Bolt is a drug cheat, however nature has at his birth provided him with an advantage, increased Fast twitch fibres that particular muscle type is fast, powerful and poorly adapted to endurance. Just perfect for a sprinter right.
So we can all see where at least part of his natural ability comes from and I am sure we can all agree that gift was no promise of his success he could just as easily decided not to develop into a skill and become a banker instead.
So here is some homework.
- Never let the phrase "to the best of my ability" fall out of your mouth again don't forget ability is just base.
- Work on discovering your give ability no birth certificate list fast twitch fibres, or perfect pitch your need experiences to find these super powers.
