Learn How To Make These Cute Woolly Hats - Great For Developing Fine Motor Skills!

Oooh how cute are these! These little woolly hats make the cutest little Christmas ornaments, or you could use them as doll hats. What ever their objective, they are fun to make and keep little fingers busy during the school holidays. This nifty activity is great for using those bits of yarn you have left over from other projects.

Before I delve into the "how to" part, I would like to make mention of the fact that this craft is excellent for helping kids develop fine motor skills as well as hand-eye coordination. This makes it not only a fun and creative pass-time, but it has an educational angle to it too. Got to love it!

What you will need:

  • Toilet paper rolls or paper towel rolls
  • Tissue paper
  • Scissors
  • A variety of colored yarn/wool

* This is an excellent way to recycle toilet rolls, tissue paper and bits and bobs of yarn!

Instructions:

  1. Cut the yarn into threads, all the same length (+_20 cm). T=You will need many of these threads.
  2. Cut off an end piece of your tissue roll, about 2 cm in length, to create a ring.
  3. Fold your thread in half and then push the "looped" part through the ring.
  4. Take the other end of your folded thread and push it through the loop to create a knot.
  5. Repeat this part until your ring is covered completely with looped threads. See picture below.
  6. Gather all of your yarn threads in a bunch and slightly twist them. Now push them through the loop together.
  7. Using your tissue paper, roll a ball. Place this ball in the ring and manipulate it until you have the perfect woolly hat shape.
  8. Take a piece of thread and tie all of the strings together. Trim the top "pom pom" to shape.
