Sushi Burger - Steemit Sandwich Contest #38

Here we go again!
Inspired by our 3rd placing in last week's SSC, this time with our very own original creation:

The Hit

The Amazing

When we saw this wonderful combination of sushi and burger on the internet a while back, it was love at first sight. Making sushi is our favourite and it was intuitive to try this new concept. Trying out the various methods/ideas we saw on the web, we found out the challenge is always how to make the sushi rice "buns" firm and hold its shape while we devour into the burger. As good as it tastes, the messiness that ensues if the rice buns fall apart is not fun (but sure is funny). We tried the methods suggested, from pressing the buns more tightly (makes the rice mushy), wrapping the whole thing in Nori (then it just becomes an Onigirazu!), frying the buns (works well but involves more work and oil). None of them gave us the promise, the handy, easy to make ideal Sushi version of the Burger. Then eureka.. we came up with an ingenious (if we may say so) way of doing it. To find out how our creation is made, let's go to the recipe and instructions:

Ingredients

  1. Bonito flakes
  2. Chuka Idako (seasoned baby octopus)
  3. Omelet
  4. Surimi stick
  5. Lettuce
  6. Mayo spread
  7. Ebiko
  8. Nori sheets
  9. Sushi rice

Making the Rice Buns

Yup, noticing the Nori sheets, some of you might have guessed how we are making the buns hold its shape :D
secret.png
Cut the Nori into a roundish shape and cut patterns by folding the nori. You want the Nori to be the "structure" that helps the rice to stick together, the holes are so that the nori is easy to break when you bite into the burger. Use a round container (or egg frying mould) to first press a layer of sushi rice then place the nori sheet onto and press another layer of rice on top to complete the rice bun. Use a plastic food glove and water to handle sushi rice so that it does not stick to your hands, using cling wrap also makes it easier to get the bun out of the container. Put the buns in the fridge for at least 30 mins to help it set and hold even firmer.

Pile up the yummies

The flavour we are doing this time is a seafood flair as Sushi is commonly associated with seafood. Truly our sushi burger has been such a hit that we have so many types of flavour in our recipe books: classic wasabi, teriyaki chicken, mustard pickled cabbage, kimchi pork to name a few! Be creative and have fun, that's the joy of cooking.

Thanks again for reading and we hope this has inspired you to try out new things. Thanks also to those who have tasted our sushi burger and given us more motivation to do better. It's a brave new world out there and let's steem on!
