Today i want to talk about what professional footballers decide to do when they decide enough is enough and hang up their boots for the last time.
The reason for this topic today is because as i was scrolling through the sports news this morning, i came across Sebastien Bassong who unfortunately did not get a contract renewal at Norwich City FC.
Bassong who spent nearly 6 years with Norwich city has been told he wont be getting a new contract at the club and at the age of 30 has decided enough is enough and has decided to take a new career path and try something new.
It has emerged that Bassong has decided to make a big career change and has decided he would take up DJing and is one of the headline acts for the 'Cactus on the Roof' event in London.
Bassong is not the first footballer to take a chance at becoming a DJ as I'm sure a lot of you will remember, as Djibril Cisse also decided a career change was best for him after 17 years in professional football
this got me wondering what other weird and wonderful career changes proffesional footballers turned to once they hung up their boots.
We all know footballers who turn to management, coaching and even punditry once they retire using their professional knowledge to educate young footballers and to educate us however many ex pros have turned to other industries away from football.
After doing plenty of research and searching over the internet and using knowledge which i was already aware of, i have put together a little list for your entertainment.
- Dion Dublin
Firstly we start with Dion Dublin who spent 20 years as a professional footballer playing at top level in the premier league has now turned to day time telly working as a presenter and expert on 'Homes under the hammer'.
He has also done a bit of punditry working for the BBC.
- Tim Wiese
Former German international goalkeeper Tim Wiese decided to take up WWE wrestling. Wiese made 6 appearances for Germany at full international level but decided wrestling was his future. Tim made his debut in 2016 teaming up with some big names and won his opening fight.
- Thomas Gravesen
Former Everton and Real Madrid midfielder Graveson decided to turn the millions he earnt in football to making an estimated £80 million playing poker professionally in Las Vegas.
- Gavin Peacock
However, the former Chelsea, QPR and Newcastle United midfielder turned his back on the punditry world to take a leap of faith, opting to become a Christian minister instead.
- Ray Wilson
Ray Wilson was one of the legends of the 1966 England World Cup-winning squad, experiencing in the fanfare of England's historic victory. But after his playing ended, he chose a new career with a slightly less raucous flavour. He became an undertaker.
