We aim to be a society governed by people selected according to merit.
The right to express their opinions is given to everyone in a meritocracy. Those opinions are valued and decisions are then made based on those that are deemed the best.
meritocracy vs democracy
- in democracy everyone has a vot - decision by consensus
- in meritocracy everyone does have a voice, some are listened to more than others.
There are many ways to build a meritocracy in your organization:
- empower the leaders (either managers or leaders who have gained influence over time from their contributions and results and have influence over the direction of others);
- foster passion across the organization (direct people towards a path that will enable them to follow their passion);
- encourage a culture of listening (By promoting listening we can ensure that the best ideas emerge).
But what happens when meritocracy is not considered or is replaced by parentocracy? Brain drain is happening!
Brain drain undermines a country's human resource development, which is critical for competitiveness of goods, works and services.
Tech and medical brain drain, particularly, is a big problem for many developing as well as developed countries.
It is the task of the state and private employers to find leverage to facilitate the promotion of meritocratic systems, like:
- addressing the financial incentives for this category of people;
- government jobs should be awarded on the basis of merit through competitive exams, rather than ties to politicians or political affiliation;
- preventing corruption and favoritism.
