Photo Short: Who says you can’t shoot into the sun. Street photography in Cheltenham, United Kingdom

I shot today’s Photo Short on the promenade in Cheltenham, United Kingdom. It was a cold January afternoon, and the sun was heading for the horizon. I liked the shadows from the trees and tried to use them as lead-in lines.

I shot this with a Nikon D300s and Samyang 8mm fisheye lens. On an APSC sensor that makes it more like a 12mm equivalent. It takes in an almost 180 degree view and has the ability to make the ordinary look extraordinary. Because of this, some people say using fisheye lenses is a lazy way to make interesting photos. They may have a point, would this scene make a good photo with a 35mm lens? Probably not. But, they also say you should never shoot into the sun, and I broke that rule too.

For me photography’s more about having fun than following rules.
