AI And Drones Are Future Of Policing Says Police Chief

Gwent Police Chief Constable Jeff Farrar admitted recently that AI and drones are likely to be the cornerstone of future policing. He notes that drones especially are going to be a key tool for police, especially as budget cuts and job cuts possibly increase.

Farrar said that he thinks within a decade that every single police vehicle will be carrying a drone in order to help assist them with their duties and deploy them when need be.

He also suspects that more computers are going to be doing jobs that you find are left up to individuals to carry-out now. AI will be increasingly taking the place of individual discernment and personal emotion.

AI and drones are helping in a big way when it comes to detective work, surveillance work, and other policing tasks.

The Gwent police force has just recently become the second police force located in Wales to gain permission to use drones in order to help search for missing persons, address “anti-social behavior,” and more. Police departments throughout the UK, Canada, the US, and other areas, are also increasingly looking to use drones for regular policing activities.

In the US there has even been suggestion from lawmakers to allow for weaponized drones to be used by police departments in the country.

In many areas around the world, there is already a deep-rooted distrust for the police with many in the public. We can only hope that police departments are going to use these tools in order to boost their efficiency and restore a sense of competency with those who've lost faith.

Privacy and human rights advocates have understandably cautioned the increasing use of these sorts of tools, so as to press the continued need to respect due process and basic human rights while the police go about carrying out their duties.
