First I want to thank you guys for support yesterday on my Workshop lesson 1. Now, we must go on! You are still in post - nuclear age, found yourself in abandoned workshop, tool store or sawmill and you want to take some basic manual tools to make your temporary home. Surely, you will need a hand saw!
What is a hand saw?
Hand saw is a tool that we use when we want to cut pieces of wood into different shapes. It must have straight blade with sharp teeth. There are many variations of hand saws, the choice depends on what you're going cut with it and how you're going to do it. So, we have crosscut saw, rip saw, back saw, bow (buck) saw, hand saw for metal... I can't list them all, but my favorite is this little bow saw because it is practical and it is very easy to use it.
First hand saws were used in ancient Egypt, but some ancient bow saws were found in Japan. The material of saw blade varied from bronze to steel.
Types of blades
We have 2 basic types of blades of hand saw. First one is crosscut blade and you use it when you want to cut across the grain of the wood. Second type of the blade is rip blade, it has larger teeth than crosscut blade and you use it when you want to make a cut that is parallel to the direction of the grain of the wood!
When you want to cut some wood into pieces, you must angle your saw correctly! The best angle for crosscut saw is 45° and for ripsaw it is 60°.
Variations of hand saws
Now I will list some of them, which are most useful and practical!
CROSSCUT SAW / RIP SAW - Crosscut saw and the ripsaw are different because of type of blade. Still, this is the type of saw that is the most usually seen and when you hear words "hand saw", you just imagine this one:
2 MAN SAW - You can use it with your friend when you want cut a large tree or wide trunk.
HAND SAW FOR METAL - This is only for fast and practical use, for more complicated work you should use electric tool.
BOW HAND SAW - It is my favorite type of saw. It is the type of ancient "frame saw". You can change its blade in cases that you need crosscut blade or rip blade. I could just cut my phone with it!
When you use your hand saw, please be careful and try not to cut yourself or anyone else!!!
We don't work on Sundays, so, next on Monday: AXE!!!
