Hong Kong Art gallery(7) - “Bleeding and Death are Two Different Things” death scenes of HK Films

Today I found a very interesting exhibition in Hong Kong…

Let’s talk about the venue of exhibition first. The venue is called Common Room & Co. It’s a multi-purpose space in Sham Shui Po. It includes café, book store, exhibition and also work space. The founder take the concept of “continue the diversity of Sham Shui Po and provide a lifestyle space” and want to link the community of this multi-purpose space. At this period, there is an exhibition called “Bleeding and Death Are Two Different Things".

The exhibition is hosted by Rex Koo, HK artists and film poster designer, cooperating with HK design crew “Dimension Plus”. It displays their paintings of the classic death scenes and Blood scenes in HK films.

Rex has an indissoluble bound to Films. He liked watching films and work as a film poster designer when he grows up. He is also the poster designer of the film “In the mood of Love”.
He liked watching the death scenes of films since he was small. Especially the last scene of Jack Nicholson dying on the snow in “The Shining”. The scene gave him a great shock and he can never forget that.

Death is special in Rex’s mind. In his mind, most humans never face “death” before death and feel strange to death. Rex found the death scenes in films give him an indirect way to face death. And this mindset gives him inspiration of this exhibition.

The Chinese Character of “Death”

The exhibition shows the death scenes of the classic HK films in the 1980s – 1990s, the golden age of HK films. In Rex’s eyes, HK films in 1980s – 1990s is the great period, but also the excessive period. Only in the period we can see so many funny and strange death scenes. But watching the different crazy death scenes make him feel a lot about death.

He quoted a dialogue in the classic films “Yi Yi” by Taiwan Director Edward Yang: “After the convention of films, the life of human is extended at least three times”. Because of films, the experience of death by Rex is extended even more than three times. And he wants to freeze the death scene by picture to an unlimited long scene.

If you know HK films well, you will have a knowing smile when looking at these pictures.

The exhibitioin shows the death scenes of HK films. I feel the death of HK films. Watching various strange and funny death scenes, I recall the brightness and diversity of HK films in the old days. And now, HK films lose its local culture. To cater the BIG Chinese market, I saw a lot of HK films which look the same. If we need to select the classic death scenes from HK films in the 2010s, I don’t know how many we can select….

In fortune, we still have some artist like Rex, who are still working hard on local creations.
