In my Jornery to Shanghai, I visited three Longtangs. What is Longtang? Longing is a traditional community composed of alleys in Shanghai, just like Hutong of Beijing, or Tonglau in Hong Kong. It is the major residential area of Shanghainese, as well as the culture from the late 19th century to late 20th century. With the development of the society, Shanghai now is full of high buildings and many Longtangs have been rebuilt.
In my previous posts, I had introduced two Longtangs. Tianzifang is now a tourist spot. Cite Bourgogne seems to have been hidden from the modern city. And I will introduce Xintiandi, which got a completely different result from the two Longtangs introduced. Today, Xintiandi is Shanghai’s most prosperous dining and fashion district.
When I read some information of Xintiandi, I found that Tianzifang, Cite Bourbogue and Xintiandi were a kind of Shikumen. Shikumen is one type of Longtangs, which was mainly built in the early 19th century. It is a mixture of tranditional Shanghai and British houses, and we can say SHikumen is unique in Shanghai. With the development of Shanghai, Shikumens in Shanghai were slowly demolished, leaving only a small part to stay.
Xintiandi is one of them. Unlike Tianzifang and Cite Bourgogne, Xintiandi undergoes a big change. It is now the hottest spot in Shanghai. With the appearance of Shikumen, it is equipped with modern restaurants and shops, combining the modern and traditional, Chinese and Western.
Just far from Xintiandi, I had seen shops with modern brands and traditional old bricks houses. I knew I had got to the right place. The Longing here is obviously renovated unlike Tianzifang and Cite Bourgogne. It is equipped with roads and footpaths. Everything looks clean and tidy. When I came closer, I found the building where the first National Congress of the Communist Party of China took place.
Stepping into Xintiandi, we saw different high-end brand stores. On the pedestrian were all seats of restaurants and bars. There was a small fountain in the center, with the statue of Fulushou.
I went around and went into a small alley, which finally gave me the feeling of Longtang. But the neat decoration made it lack of some sense of realism.
In an article talking about Xintiandi, the author said, “Foreigners feel Xintiandi very “Chinese” and Chinese feel Xintiandi very” modern” I wonder if there is any conflict? It seems like every thing very Chinese is old? Xintiandi may be the best example of the conservation of Shanghai Longtangs. Although it lost the function of residential, it is now a brand new shopping and fashion centre, not only providing new meaning to traditional Longtang, but also bring Hugh income to developers.
It’s the end of my Shanghai Journey. Thanks for watching!
