Above is something I was able to capture recently with my phone and no tripod. As luck would have it, we did not have good visibility, so the Aurora was very weak and basically nonexistent with the naked eye.
Our friends came prepared with a nice DSLR cameras and took some nice looking shots with long exposure. I was curious to see what my phone camera could do, so I searched around to find other posts about how.
There seem to be many configurations, but the main points are the following:
- High ISO to take in faint light (I don't know much here. Someone suggested 800 to start, and tweak it a bit from there)
- Long exposure.
- Tripod. Or something steady. I did not have this, so it'll have to be blurry!
Here was my configuration:
- Google Pixel 2
- Open Camera app
- ISO
- A steady hand (not...)
Shows the settings on my app. You'll also see a timer for 5 seconds when I attempted to give myself 5 seconds before putting it on the car windshield instead of a tripod. The angle didn't work out. So the one you see here is just me using my shaky hand to take the photo. Blurry, but you can still see some pretty waves, and in some cases the stars!
When the photo first comes out, you need the turn up the phone brightness all the way to see it.
This was how it looked before. Then using the photos app to auto adjust the colors, you get the first one, reposted here:
I'll show one more pair I took. It got cloudier as the night went on...
Before
After
And finally, let's compare it to something from the big guns:
15 second exposure on a Nikon DSLR (don't know which, or other parameters)
This was on a different day with less clouds when I didn't know I could even capture it in my phone. But it doesn't matter... Amazing...
Still, was happy to have something show up on the dinky phone. Unfortunately, we did not see a fully visible bright aurora. But this was still fun!
