The Old Point Loma Lighthouse

San Diego On The Swift

The day that my flight home to Idaho was to depart, I found myself standing in my nephew's downtown apartment with my bag packed. I also was staring at him in a bit of bemused wonder, for this is what he said: "Get in the car. It's time for the tour."

A whirlwind tour was what it was, for two hours, six miles walked, and 200 photos later I had seen every major landmark and attraction in the San Diego area. My nephew does flight through the sites for every out of town visitor that he entertains, and his auntie was no exception.

One of the many sites I took in was the Old Point Loma Lighthouse. Located in the Cabrillo National Monument, the lighthouse stands as an archaic testament to the commitment of man to keep his fellow ship-dwelling humans from running aground. Construction of the lighthouse was completed in 1854, and the lighthouse was in the lighting business until March 23rd, 1891. Apparently fog and clouds caused a bit of a lighting problem, so they had to make a new lighting station at the bottom of the hill. Hindsight is so illuminating.

As this sight was part of the whirlwind tour, I didn't get any time to take in the exhibits in detail, rather my nephew and I strode around like main characters in a John Wayne movie. In fact, I am pretty sure that I uttered: "Excuse me little lady." to a wandering school kid, as there was no shortage of them at this particular sight. Field trip!

It was an absolutely gorgeous day, which is probably a dominant feature in San Diego, and I loved staring out upon the ocean and it's boat pimples. The navy landing craft ship was a real throw back as when I lived in the Alaskan logging camp we used a World War Two landing craft to move the logs and our various life dander around.

This Old Point Loma Lighthouse was one of the standouts on my flight through the sights, and I totally recommend dropping by for a visit. Maybe one longer that ten minutes might even be in order!

And as always, all of the images in this post were taken by the author on her sea salt and sushi rice starch encrusted iPhone.
