Places to visit in Ireland #4: Shipwreck on Inis Oirr - The Aran Islands! ☘️

Hey Steemit Friends!

Before we get into the story about the shipwreck, let's set the scene. The Aran Islands are a collection of 3 remote islands off the coast of Galway. In total, about 1,300 people live on the islands. Without modern technology, the islands would have been a lot more rural than they are today.

In one dark stormy night in 1960, the people of the Island of Inis Oirr witnessed a ship called the Plassey washing up on their shore. The local people helped to rescue those who were on board and saved what they could from the raging sea. There were a lot of goods on the ship that night. Simple things for us would have been a luxury for the people there at the time. Even if it didn’t have any value, many pieces including wheels, compasses and various parts of the ship were taken as souvenirs and reminders.

Besides historical interest, the ship is became popular because of its appearance in the wildly popular Channel 4 series Father Ted. This TV show is highly recommended to everybody who wants to know real Ireland! It’s comedy show based on priests living in rural Ireland, it's really hilarious. There are only 25 episodes but each of them is brilliant!

To get the island you should get the ferry which is going around every hour from the nearest village Doolin. There is also a unique chance to take a small airplane as the Inis Oirr has its own little airport despite the island is very small. The walk from the pier to the eastern side (where the ship is) took me around 45 minutes. I decided to walk but tourists have an opportunity to rent bikes or use other very popular transport - a horse and a carriage!
The ship looks very old and dangerous but it’s still possible to come closer and look inside. It was a big freighter but now it’s just living place for a lot of birds.

From this side of the island you can a see stunning view of the Cliffs of Moher that is truly unique and only those on Inis Oirr can enjoy.
