Wong Kei is part of the local institution in London Chinatown loved and hated by many Londoners. For those who have never heard of the infamous Wong Kei, it is a Chinese restaurant that offers down to earth no frills good food. It's not the best of the best in London Chinatown, but a lot better than most.
旺記是倫敦唐人街其中一個著名地標,顧客們對它又愛又恨。如果你沒聽過旺記,它是倫敦唐人街一家老店,提供簡單快捷便利的中餐。 它的食物在唐人街不是最好吃,但有一定的水準。
Whenever I want a quick meal, it's always my go to place. Seating and decor is basic, and during busy times you have to share a table with strangers.
每當我在倫敦想吃簡單的中餐,我就會到旺記。裏面沒有華麗的裝潢,繁忙時候更要與其他客人併桌。
My favorite dish, which I order most of the time is stir fry beef ho fan. Ho fan is thin strips of rice noodle (great if you're gluten intolerant) and originates from Guangzhou in southern China. I haven't had this dish for a long time so no surprises that I ordered it again today. It tastes just the same as before.
通常我都會點最喜愛的乾炒牛河。 河粉源自中國廣州沙河鎮,所以有時也會稱為沙河粉。它是用米漿做成薄薄的粉條,比台灣的粄條更薄更滑。 我已很久沒有吃乾炒牛河,今天到旺記當然要點來吃。味道跟以前一樣沒變。
The other reason that I like Wong Kei is because it is cheap, has no service charge and offers good value for money.
我喜歡到旺記另一個原因,是因為價錢實惠,而且沒有附加服務費。 以倫敦的生活指數來說CP值很高。
Actually, the real reason why I want to share this restaurant with you is because of its notorious past. I started coming many years ago when I first started to work in London and didn't have much money in those days. It was famous for its rude service but that didn't seem to deter customers. I remember one time I was waiting for a table during a busy period, and in front of me were a group of four customers.
Customer : Table for four please
Waiter : Two there! Two there! (Pointing to empty spaces on two separate tables spread across the room!!!)
People just loved it!! Sadly, this level of service is not available anymore 🙃. Now we just come for the food.
其實想跟大家介紹旺記的主要原因,是因為它以前惡名遠播。 多年前我剛到倫敦工作時, 經濟能力限,常常來旺記光顧。那時候它以服務差而聞名,但顧客沒有因此而卻步。 我記得有一次繁忙時候在等位,前面有四位外籍顧客。
外籍顧客 : 麻煩四位桌
服務員 : (指著天各一方兩張桌) 這裡兩位! 那邊兩位!
就是這樣的服務,但客人卻不介意,有些還很喜歡。 可惜這樣有性格的服務已不再有了 🙃。 現在來光顧的客人都是為它的食物而來哩。
