The Characteristics of The Sarira Pagoda in Daeheung-sa Temple

Just before entering into the main gate of the temple, there was a Sarira Pagoda area.
The sarira pagoda in Daeheung-sa temple was different from others in its style.
Usually the sarira pagoda was located in hidden place far from the road
Then the sarira temple in Daeheung-sa was located in the closest area to the temple.

In many cases people needed to find out where the sarira pagoda was located in.
But the sarira pagoda of this temple was located in front of the entrance of the temple.

There was a gate and walls for the sarira pagoda.
The gate and the walls were as low that anybody could see the sarira pagoda with no difficulty.

According to the explanation board, there was a very famous monk in Korean Buddhist History.
His name was ‘Seosan’ meaning West Mountain. In Buddhism the West means the paradise.
He had fought against the Japanese Army when Japan had invaded in Korea during 1592- 1597.
He was not only the enlightened monk but also very famous General.

It is some what weird that the great religious leader had fought in the battle field.
But there was a reason he had to fight against the Japanese Army.
The lives of ordinary people under the Japanese Army was so deteriorated, they were looted and slaughtered by the Japanese Army.
So the Buddhist monks had had to fight against the Japanese Army to protect their religion and the lives of People.

The board explained there was a sarira pagoda for Seosan.
But it was not easy to find. It was too small and not extinguished.
It seemed that he didn’t want a splendid stupa for him.

I though the one of the humblest pagoda was Seosan’s

In my opinion, the sarira pagoda must be the most representative symbol in Korean Buddhism.
Then why did they build the sarira pagoda in a remote place ?
