This lake is located on the territory of Tajikistan to the north and the Pamirs in Tajik language is just denotes black lake. Karakul is draining, ie, has no connection with the river systems of the oceans.
The lake is situated at an altitude of 3914 meters above sea level. This height makes it one of the highest. However, taking into account an area of 380 square kilometers, it is one of the largest lakes at this altitude. It is noteworthy that the maximum depth of the lake is a lot of 236 meters.
