A Wolfs‘ journey around the world … Tel-Aviv

Tel-Aviv is one of the coolest places in the world, very diverse and suitable for all kinds of travellers. In a country that is dominated by the three main world religions, Tel-Aviv is a beacon of freedom and secularism. East meets west, north meets south, Europe meets Asia, fat meets fit and religion meets beach-party's. A city where people care about health and one of the first places where veganism was trending in a country dominated by start-ups and high-tech companies.

I have been to Israel 5 times in my life and each time I've visited Tel-Aviv. Over the years, the city has changed drastically and to its benefit. Old neighboorhoods are being or have been renovated such as Neve Tzedek (the original heart of Tel-Aviv),HaTachana, the old railwaystation or Sarona.

  • Category: City Trip
  • Recommended length of stay: Tel-Aviv can be seen in 4 days, but there's so much more to see and do in the country, that I'd recommend a minimum of 2 weeks and use Tel-Aviv as your base for excursions
  • Currency: Shekel (NIS)
  • Timezone: GMT+2
  • Perfect for: Long weekend, Romance, Family, History, Bachelor-weekend, Sun & Beach, diversity, everything
  • Target group: Couples, over 50's, colleagues, families, friends, backpackers, history buffs, religious trips

This is a city you need to feel, taste, experience and embrace. Let the people surprise you and make you feel special. I've been here as a single, in times of dating and with my family. The country has adjusted to suit everyone. When you're alone, you always have friends and a roof over your head and a party to attend. When you're with a friend/partner you'll have plenty to do from discovering history or religion to enjoying the beach or swimming in the dead-sea. If you're travelling with a family, there's no safer place in the world and everyone wants to help you out.

Why should you visit Tel-Aviv:

  1. All Year round good weather. We were there once in January and the lowest temperature was 18 degrees Celcius
  2. Fantastic food from all around the world with new/modern infuses. Like the sushi from restaurant Moon
  3. Everyone is welcome and you can indulge yourself as much or as little as you want to
  4. Tel-Aviv is nothing like you know of the middle East. It's hip, young, old, free, religious and secular all at once

Tel-Aviv is also know for the houses built in the 1920's according to the Bauhaus Style

What the guid books don't tell you is how people live in relative peace in a very combustile part of the world and have a 'live by the day' mentality. The people are relaxed, but know through the hard knocks of life that you don't life forever. Everything is easy and if it doesn't happen today, don't get annoyed if it doesn't happen tomorrow either. Tel-Aviv has its own timezone, 'It will happen, when it happens'.

What should you definitely do when you're in Tel-Aviv? Here are 5 of my favourite things:

    1. Have Sushi at Moon
    2. Visit the food market at Sarona
    3. Have a shawarma at one of the many shawarma restaurants or try falafel
    4. Try shakshuka at least once
    5. Go shopping at the beautiful Ramat Aviv Mall with its own Koi-fishes. It's the most expensive mall in Israel

Off course you can also relax at the beach, shop in Dizengoff Centre or Ben-Yehuda street, stroll the Carmel market, visit Jaffa, go to the 'Old Harbour' party till you drop and much more. These are just my favourites. If you have time, there's also a lot to do outside Tel-Aviv, so feel free to ask me for more advice or comment below with you own suggestions I should do, the next time I go.
