Khao San Road - Bangkok
Last night child free
What to do in Bangkok if you have one night left childfree, head to Khao San Road of course. If my hubby had his way we would have relaxed in and enjoyed the quiet time but as you know opposites often attract and happy wife equals a happy life so off to Khao San we went.
If you don't know about Khao San Road then you are probably not a backpacker, been to Thailand or have been living under a rock as Khao San Road is one of the must do things in Bangkok.
Clearly, given we about to pick up our son, we are not backpackers but once upon a time I was, I spent three months with one of my best friends backpacking through Thailand and one of our favourite places we stayed was on this strip as it is a one-stop party shop. Well at night at least, during the daytime it's much more subdued and from memory a whirl of smells you just don't need when you are hung over.
Don't tell my bestie I told you but she threw up down an alley off of Khao San due to just that reason.
We arrived pretty early as far as Khao San goes but there was still lots to see, including the obligatory drunk tourist, market stalls and loud music coming at you for every side, most of the time competing with each other, which makes an interesting combo in some parts.
Talking of interesting things to see and do, we came across more than one of these tasty treat stalls, and while I am open to trying new things, I was more than happy to pay the 10 baht to take some photos without the requirement to eat them.
When I was in Thailand backpacking with my bestie, we tried a few of these but the below three were beyond our upchuck reflex.
Scorpian, Cricket or Frogs anyone?
This is new, when did Nitrous oxide become a thing? Although we never tried this I have had it before as a pain med when in a hospital and it made every word sound like I was at a rave. I am sure there was giggling but I was also in immense pain getting a wound packed that was the size of a fist, so it was mixed with a lot of tears and I was not keen to relive that experience.
Fun fact @shai-hulud just googled for me. This is actually the seventh most popular drug in the 50 countries as found out by a global drug survey.
Another thing that I think makes the Bangkok experience is the obligatory Tuk Tuk drive. Don't be disillusioned these drivers will take you for as much as you are willing to give so whatever they quote you, half it and know that if you were to take a metered taxi that it would cost you half that again.
Given that he dropped us in the wrong place and refused to take us any further there was zero chance I was paying him 50 baht to take a photo nor was I deleting the hundred I took during the trip back to the hotel room. Although I knew this was a possibility it was a final rite of passage for me as I really wanted to go on one last ride to commemorate our last night as unresponsible adults.
As tomorrow we will have to be responsible for a whole little human and the stress of driving in a taxi with no baby seat is enough let alone an open-air Tuk Tuk. In saying this I think he would love it as he seems to be a little adrenaline junkie like his mummy already. The joys of growing up and worrying about someone more than yourself, an interesting concept to get used too but one we are more than ready for.
Dinner before Khao San Road
Note that while this post was intended to be out before we picked up little man, life got in the way and then got super busy while we figured out this parenting thing, at first we just needed to sleep when he slept. Our initial thoughts of being able to write while he slept went out the window when we couldn't keep our eyes open. It's now day three and life is getting slightly more orderly as he learns to trust us and we learn his quirks.
Thanks for sticking around in our time of little posting, we will be back in no time and as always thanks for reading and hope to see you next time.
