After we had left Philadelphia the last evening, this day we just had to drive 2 hours to arrive in Washington D.C., the capital of the United States of America.
We were looking for a central paid parking lot, from where we could walk to the memorials and the parks.
Lincoln Memorial
The first stop on our to-do list was the White House, which was a little disappointing. You have to stay behind a big fence, which is also a barrier against taking good photos. From this distance the White House seems quite small and not very spectacular. So this sightseeing is done in almost no time.
The White House
We continued to visit the famous memorials, beginning with the Washington Monument, which is because of its size (169 m) hard to miss.

From this spot you have a great view of the Lincoln Memorial which seems to be the most popular and therefore most crowded memorial.

After that we can recommend to walk to the Jefferson Memorial.
Jefferson Memorial
The path through the park is very nice and much less crowded. You can walk directly beneath the basin and visit some more Memorials, such as the Martin Luther King Memorial.

As a last stop we walked to the capitol of Washington D.C., which is much bigger and much more impressive than the White House. Unfortunately is was under construction during our visit.

After visiting three big cities, the next day we finally will enter the first national park on our trip: the Shenandoah NP in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
