Oh man...
How's that song go..? "A day late, a dollar short"? I think that pretty much sums up this post...
You see, a little over a week ago @kommienezuspadt announced the new theme for his comic art contest "Trial by Comics", and when I saw that the theme was "Super Villains" I got pretty excited. And I made big plans to get my act together and produce a new drawing. Well, life kinda got in the way, and of course I had to prioritize family over artwork. So, while I did manage to pump out a drawing and the linework over the weekend, I couldn't find the time to finish it until this morning. Wah-wah!
I still count this as a win, though, even if I'm too late to enter the actual contest... because it inspired me to draw, which hasn't happened much until recently. And because I really pushed myself to not take any short cuts, or to compromise on what I was going to do. Yes, I could've simplified. Or I could've submitted what I considered to be an unfinished piece. But I didn't. I wanted to see it through fully before posting it. So here she finally is!
Here's a few pics of the process:
First I did up a sketch:
Then I decided to ink it, to make sure I kept nice crisp lines, and a more comic-y feel.
Then I started laying down colors with my Prismacolor pencils:
Added more shading:
And then I did the background:
(This photo was taken with my iphone, and the first was taken with my Canon. Neither captured it exactly right, but close enough.)
Here's a detail shot:
And proof that it's mine!
I'm fairly happy with how this one turned out. There are definitely parts that I'm not totally thrilled with, but considering the hiatus I'd taken from doing art, I feel like I'm getting decent results. I have some growing to do, and things I'll need to work on, but the only way to do that in art is to just keep on practicing!
Perhaps this will be a lesson for next week though, to not bite off more than I can chew. (Or at least to have a plan B if plan A proves to be more than I can manage. lol)
Looking forward to seeing what sorts of inspiration find me this week in this lovely community!
Where do you find your inspiration? What skills are you working on? Any tips or suggestions for future projects are always welcome! :)
