Now I would like to share a small travelogue that I had done as a #Ulog story. This is a place in my home state that didn't explored much but the place is so marvelous that even Titanic fame Leonardo Di Caprio fell in love with this place. And here is my story - read on along with some photographs.
WHEN I VISITED DICAPRIO'S FAVORITE PLACE IN INDIA
In the southern part of india, in a small state with the tourism tag saying God’s Own Country lies a small locality that boasts of one of the favorite of famous Oscar award winner Hollywood actor Leonardo Di Caprio. He even quoted about this place as “If there is a paradise on earth, it is here”. And that was a hill station in Idukki district of Kerala sharing border with the neighboring state of Tamilnadu. A place which is not that much popular but very attractive with its geographical terrain and bright landscape all around. The name of this place is Ramakkalmedu in Idukki district of Kerala State.
The entrance is diverted to left and right with the routes leads to two different location and both have its own identity to claim as the best among the two. The left one was slightly steep with climbing looks like little difficult which we chose first. As we climbed little by little sometimes through very narrow space the view from every point was changing to different landscapes.
Soon we reached in an area that was plain from where we could see the bordering state on the other side and the huge rocks to be climbed stood tall at a fair distance with few people standing at the top. We were not yet decided if it is possible at all for climbing the peak through few cleared pathway among the plain.
The geographical profile of the nature in such unexplored area to a certain extent was so marvelous that even the locals may wonder if they will try to look at those places in a tourist’s perspective. On one side stand a huge gigantic sized rock and to the opposite was a breath taking deep valley leaving a very narrow space that only one person can walk at a time. If look little far away then people can identify some villages or spread across on a vast area. Two of my friends tried walking in that narrow space available to see how far they can go and to see what surprise there on the other side, but nothing special though.
The whole location is always windy that can be realized by presence of many wind mills that can be seen at many faraway places and now the wind was blowing heavily that even walking seems to be difficult and we reached at a place that only below one set of rocks with just enough width for one human being.
Few visitors were already on top and it was a slightly frightening thought for climbing to the top. But the spectacular geography of the nature all around looking from the peak was another marvelous sight to be cherished for a long time.
On one side at a throw away distance it was another state with entirely different culture and life style that may be at a throw away distance from the place we were standing a huge area. The all around view from the top was so spectacular with looking down to all the four direction to realize the original habituated area is so far away and looking up to have a feel of blue sky and white clouds above.
Another surprise was in store after seeing a survey mark or more technically a station point fixed as permanent mark in concrete. As a civil Engineer it was so easy to identify its importance. It is used as a base mark based on which other points are located to profile the boundaries in simple terms, made me to ponder too how states were marking the borders as I was standing in Kerala and if I drop a stone on to my left it would fall in Tamil Nadu.
Wind was blowing strongly and sun was at its peak that drained our energy and as we were walking back an old man was selling butter milk mixed with green chilly and ginger along with some other stuff which brought us much needed relief.
The trip remains incomplete without a walk to the other nearby location, may be more important due to man made structure. Gigantic statues of a man and women known as Kuravan and Kurathi is installed in this another eye catching location.
It made sense and didn’t surprise me when I think about why DiCaprio fell in love with this place. This tiny village along the border of Tamil Nadu and Kerala is highly recommended for a day trip which is around 13 Kms from Kattappana and very close to Kumily.
