The situation is desperate for the good people of Venezuela. Many are suffering and dying as economic collapse, government corruption, and supply breakdowns leave people without options. Many who can are escaping from the country with their lives.
I have met several wonderful people in the past few weeks, from this troubled country. For those with internet access, Steemit represents a possibility of earning a small income - one that the government can't hyperinflate away. Their stories are shocking, saddening, and very similar.
(My friend Edgar's 1 year old son's birthday cake. They tried to make it a special day for him.)
I began doing what I could do to help. A week ago, I offered to give the proceeds of this post to 4 genuinely needy Venezuelan friends, @edgrand, @nieuscarin, @petrarodriguez, and @edgargonzalez.

A reminder for people not familiar with the economy of Venezuela, the currency is the Bolivar (it keeps getting devalued and manipulated and renamed). 1 Steem will convert into quite a few Bolivar, and purchase a number of things locally.

Steemit allows this to happen instantly, and securely. Getting payments to people in Venezuela isn't easy at the best of times! It lets me view the blogs of the people I'm helping, to be sure I'm allocating my resources where they'll do the most good. I prefer that over sending my money to some charity organization, not knowing how much of it will reach my intended targets.
Edgar's family is thirsty
Edgar (@edgargonzalez) has a son who just turned 1 year old, and they spent everything they had to buy the ingredients to make him a cake. I feel badly that an entire family had to pitch in to afford the ingredients for a plain cake, to brighten a little child's day.
Edgar doesn't whine about his situation. The other day, he went fishing in the ocean to bring home food for his family. He caught some fish but the raft he was using sank, and he almost drowned. He was happy to bring home some fish.
Edgar's father has passed away, but he left Edgar a water pump and irrigation system on their family's property. Edgar has been generously using this to provide water for many desperate families in his neighborhood.
Yesterday, a power outage caused the water pump to burn out! Edgar posted about it here. His smile shows his concern:
Today, a repairman will diagnose the problem and provide a quote. It will probably cost quite a bit. I made Edgar the first of the 4 recipients to get his Steem. I hope it helps! (The other 3 will get their Steem as I have sufficient liquid Steem to send them.)
While I wish we could do something larger and more impactful, I am thankful to Steemit for providing the means to find these people, share vital information with them, and help them buy food and supplies half way around the world.

He conocido a varias personas maravillosas en las últimas semanas, desde este turbulento país. Para aquellos con acceso a Internet, Steemit representa una posibilidad de ganar un pequeño ingreso-uno que el gobierno no puede hiperinflar lejos. Steemit permite que esto suceda instantáneamente y de forma segura. ¡ conseguir pagos a la gente en Venezuela no es fácil en el mejor de los casos! Me permite ver los blogs de las personas que estoy ayudando, para estar seguro de que estoy asignando mis recursos donde van a hacer el mejor bien. La familia de Edgar tiene sed
Edgar (@edgargonzalez) tiene un hijo que acaba de hacer de 1 año de edad, y pasaron todo lo que tenían que comprar los ingredientes para hacerle un pastel.
Edgar no se queja de su situación. El otro día, se fue a pescar al océano para traer comida casera para su familia. Cogió un poco de pescado, pero la balsa que estaba usando se hundió, y casi se ahoga. Él estaba feliz de traer a casa un poco de pescado.
El padre de Edgar ha fallecido, pero dejó a Edgar una bomba de agua y un sistema de irrigación en la propiedad de su familia. Edgar ha estado usando generosamente esto para proveer agua a muchas familias desesperadas en su vecindario.
Ayer, un apagón causó que la bomba de agua se quemara. Edgar lo publicó aquí. Su sonrisa muestra su preocupación:
