In 2016, the British Government asked the internet to vote in a poll to name a cutting-edge $287 million dollar polar research ship. BoatyMcBoatface won in a landslide victory that will surprise no one who has been on the internet since it was just “a series of tubes.”
The British rejected this name, instead naming the vessel the RRS Sir David Attenborough. However in a display of deference to the will of the people, the AUVs (autonomous-underwater-vehicles) aboard the ship were indeed named BoatyMcBoatface, and the first took its maiden research voyage to study ocean water flow and turbulence on March 17, 2017.
Much like the robot-submarines that share his name, BoatyMcBoatface exists quietly, beneath the waves of the everyday, where perhaps time, or at least its perception, moves a bit more slowly.
BoatyMcBoatface has not posted or commented in almost 9 months. Aside from the clever name and witness updates listed below, there is not much information to be had on this cleverly titled marine vessel. However, legend has it, late at night, off the coast of Greenland, if you listen carefully...
BoatyMcBoatface holds 63,000 SP and is NOT powering down, which could potentially violate his voluntary oath of silence..
