Previously, other attempts at modification of human embryos had been carried out exclusively in other countries. For example, three other reports of this type of genetic issue were previously reported in China. However, the latter experiment is said to be revolutionary, both in the number of embryos involved in the work and in the demonstration that human embryos can be modified to correct defective genes that cause hereditary diseases.
Hope is to demonstrate that modern science and medicine can erase or amend the genes responsible for hereditary diseases. However, critics point out that, once the technology has been developed, and perfected, it could be used for other purposes.
