Carson McCullers
Back when Time magazine still mattered, her first novel was included on Times' 100 best English-language novels published since 1923—the beginning of TIME. Yet there is a good chance many of you might never have heard of Carson McCullers, or her first novel, The Heart is a Lonely Hunter. Had it not been required reading for a college course I took when I was 19, I suspect I would never have read it.
Carson McCuller was born and raised in Columbus, Georgia, which is in the middle of the state, directly on the border with Alabama – smack dab in the heart of Dixie. As an adolecent she showed great promise as a pianist. After finishing high school she was enrolled in the Juilliard School of Music in New York City, but contracted rheumatic fever and was forced to return to Georgia to recuperate. She later retuned to New York, but decided to find a job, take night classes at Columbia, and become a writer.

When I read her book, I lacked the maturity to fully gasp her extraordinary literary achievement. Her deep psychological insights into the characters would be remarkable for someone in her 40s, but it is simply astounding for a 23 year old first time author. It was only after I reread the book over a decade later, that I grasp the underlying themes, and the ingenious plot, characters and relationships she employed to convey them.
I don't want to spoil the plot, but essentially she vividly transports the reader into life in a small Southern city with five primary characters. John Singer, a deaf-mute on whom the others unload their problems and dreams. Mick Kelly, a girl on the cusp of adolencene, Biff Brannon, the owner of the local diner (which allows various other characters to come in and out of the story), Jake Blount, an alcoholic union organizer, and Dr. Copeland, a black physician. Within that context, the story deals with alienation and the lack of genuine communication. Without being obvious about it, she shows relationships from each person's perspective, and makes clear that percieved “connections” and “communications” are merely self delusions. Whether they know it or not, everyone is alone and misunderstood. At the same time it is a great read.
There was at least one positive aspect of Carson McCullers untimely death in 1967 at the age of 50 -- she was spared seeing her book on the big screen. Unlike “To Kill a Mockingbird” which was well adapted to film, the 1968 Hollywood version of “The Heart is a Lonely Hunter” is absolutely dreadful.
Although I now have a German passport, I must admit that the musicians, authors, dialect, and culture of the American South continue to deeply resonate with me. For reasons I don't quite understand, there is, despite undenaible transgressions, something special about the culture of the South. We have many great Southern writers, but my personal favorite is Carson McCullers.

Wäre es nicht für mich für einen Collegekurs Pflicht gewesen, vermute ich, dass ich ihn nie gelesen hätte.

Als ich ihr Buch las, fehlte mir die Reife, um ihre außergewöhnliche literarische Leistung vollends zu begreifen. Ihre tiefe psychologische Einsicht in die Charaktere wäre für jemanden in seinen vierzigern bemerkenswert gewesen, aber für einen 23 Jahre alten Erstautor ist es einfach erstaunlich. Erst nachdem ich das Buch über ein Jahrzehnt später noch einmal gelesen hatte, begriff ich die raffinierten Handlungen, Charaktere und Beziehungen, die sie einsetzte, um ihre Themen zu vermitteln.
Ich will die Handlung nicht verderben, aber im Wesentlichen transportiert sie den Leser lebhaft in eine kleine Südstadt mit fünf Hauptcharakteren. John Singer, ein Taubstummer, auf den die anderen ihre Probleme und Träume entladen. Mick Kelly, ein Mädchen an der Schwelle zum Jugendlichen, Biff Brannon, der Besitzer eines Lokals (in dem sich verschiedene Charaktere treffen konnten), Jake Blount, ein Alkoholiker und Gewerkschaftsorganisator, und Dr. Copeland, ein schwarzer Arzt. In diesem Kontext geht es um Entfremdung und den Mangel an echter Kommunikation. Unterschwellig zeigt sie Beziehungen aus der Perspektive jeder Person und macht deutlich, dass die wahrgenommenen "Verbindungen" und "Kommunikationen" lediglich Selbsttäuschungen sind. Ob sie es wissen oder nicht, jeder ist allein und missverstanden. Gleichzeitig ist es eine großartige Lektüre.
Es gab mindestens einen positiven Aspekt von Carson McCullers vorzeitigem Tod im Jahr 1967 im Alter von 50 Jahren - sie wurde verschont, ihr Buch auf der großen Leinwand zu sehen. Im Gegensatz zu den Film "To Kill a Mockingbird", der gut gelungen war, ist die Hollywood-Version von "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter" von 1968 absolut furchtbar.
Obwohl ich jetzt einen deutschen Pass habe, muss ich zugeben, dass die Musiker, Autoren, Dialekte und Kultur des amerikanischen Südens weiterhin tief in mir mitschwingen. Aus Gründen, die ich nicht ganz verstehe, gibt es, trotz der teilweise dunklen Vergangenheit, etwas Besonderes an der Kultur des Südens. Wir haben viele großartige Schriftsteller aus dem Süden, aber mein persönlicher Favorit ist Carson McCullers.
